Creativity & Critical Thinking is being able to understand and solve problems which one may encounter. This could be through the use of collaborating with others, forming connections or applying different strategies to overcome the challenges. English
Within Semester 1, there were numerous assignments and tasks which were given to me throughout all the subjects, allowing me to demonstrate my creativity as well as critical thinking. An example of this would be in English within term 1, where I was given an assignment to create either a short story or a vignette from any prompt or even from my own imagination. Although at the beginning, I was struggling to find a prompt to make a start and hung up upon the idea of a vignette being "too hard for the immense word count given" and having to create a short story. In the end, I decided that I would go upon writing a vignette, a new topic of which I could demonstrate my creative skills from creating a short descriptive scene of a painting. I wanted to approach this very creatively and think of a scenario with significance and writing the vignette with a literal meaning as well as a hidden, underlying, metaphorical and symolising meaning.
The final product of this English Assignment was based upon a traditional Japanese painting of a tree with poem slips hung upon its branches and a rock sitting beneath it. The description in the vignette symbolises a person walking up to the tree and sitting down on the rock in a somewhat reflective state, with the underlying meaning behind the true feelings of mother's and describing from the pain to the content that they may experience through undergoing their everyday experiences from being a teen into adulthood and motherhood. These were creatively hinted through the title as well as small hints throughout the short moment of the girl walking towards the tree as well as the reflective tone.
My writer's statement for the vignette is displayed on the left.
Digital Technologies
Additionally, I have shown the values of creative and critical thinking within Digital Technologies. My assignment was to create a website based on the product which we had produced earlier within Term 2. Through creating my website through the newly introduced languages of HTML and CSS to my class and having to create a website over the weekend, my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities were put to the test as I encountered numerous problems throughout the whole process of creating this website as it was a new topic. I was able to overcome this as I used external resources, such as the website with useful tips (given by my teacher) as well as google and my own understanding on coding through my common sense, figuring out solutions to the problems encountered by looking over my code. All these solutions used the skill of critical thinking and allowed me to be able to solve the problem and resulting in allowing me to gain an outstanding grade which was one that I was proud of.
I created a website which included all the requirements of the task sheet (apart from the one comment about inclusion of the fonts) and presented them pleasantly through the website designing process, which was seen to be done to a higher standard than my peers, according to my teacher's comment in the feedback section after marking the assignment.
My slides for my website developing process was recorded below.
The assignment was based on creating a website for a product, called the bow-tie pro which I had collaborated with my peers to create out of the resources of a handkerchief and using an Arduino to create a product which would be of use to others, through using the functions of the Arduino. The website was to promote this creative design in a way which showcases its features, how it works, the target audience and creating a pitch for it. Although numerous improvements could be implemented, I was quite proud of the final result.
English
Throughout term 2 of 2023, I was able to effectively display the values of critical thinking and communication as I had an English assignment which was an analysis of a class novel, named, Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. The task was to answer two analysis questions based on choosing one of the three excerpt texts provided. This enabled me to demonstrate my writing skills and displaying my thoughts through a written piece, answering two questions. Due to limited word count provided, it enabled me to carefully think about what I was to place into the analysis of the questions and specific evidence from the text which were a significant factor to answer the questions.
The document on the left is the task sheet and below are my answers to the analysis questions.
Science
Science practical report, finding a creative independent investigation to carry out and collecting data and analysing the experiment conducted as well as researching about the potential factors which may potentially affect the experiment, figuring out how to counteract these problems and use critical thinking when receiving the data and comparing it to the initial ideas and hypothesis to the results. This task was Substance X, which was quite a long investigation, conducting certain experiments and observations in order to research, evaluate and give a final statement about the specific substance I was given.
My practical report is shown on the right and the task sheet is below.
I received a high grade for this assignment as I was able to critically analyse my substance and provide reasonable and sufficient information and observations which contributed to figuring out the specific type of substance.
Additionally, the comments which were written as feedback on my document of submission for this assignment by my science teacher, Mr. Jones, is seen to be all quite positive feedback, instead of feedback for improvements.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the task was to produce a mathematical investigation called "First Across the Line", given the initial ideas of a race between different animals and needing to figure out, calculate, understand and apply the understanding and knowledge from the calculations in the context of the race. This was based on the topic of polynomials.
