The self-assessment was based on two out of the five C's: which were the skills of Communication and Collaboration. Out of the six criterion types of which either comes under the communication or collaboration rubric, I chose three in order to give myself a ranking and provide evidence on why I gave myself the ranking I did as well as my opinion and reflection on how well or how poor I had displayed the skills.
The criterias that I chose were: Working as an Effective Group, Working together to Build a Positive Group Culture and Working together - respecting others ideas. Although I didn't do as well as I could've, in the future, I will bear in mind to make sure to give more of my input into group tasks as well as creating original ideas instead of building on other's pre-thought ideas.
All three of the criterias that I chose to provide evidence for was for the skill of Collaboration, however, I believe that both of these skills are closely linked with each other and in order to achieve Collaboration, Communication must be used effectively first.
For this criteria, I have myself an A5 and wrote both the things that I believe I did well, with the example being from the mini group project of creating suitable protection for an egg drop, out of news paper, string and one line of tape,
I provided an example of how I managed to collaborate and build on my peer's ideas as well as providing them with the idea that they shouldn't be too reckless and give some thought into what they were going to do, instead of jumping straight into making the design. Although I didn't give much input for my own original ideas, I managed to build on others and worked well with my team members in order to not completely set ourselves up for failure.
I gave myself a B4 for this criteria, also with evidence from the egg drop which had taken place in one of our Leap lessons. My group managed to work together in order to create an egg drop, through effective communication and understanding of what each of the group members wanted to do, instead of having some other disagreeing with the design being chosen.
I believe that I had given quite constructive feedback towards my peer's suggestions and new ideas, but didn't get much back for myself. This was due to the fact that I had not given enough of my own ideas within our discussion, therefore not getting much feedback, nor could the others build much on my ideas much. In the future, more idea contributions are needed from myself, in order to be brainstorming the most amount of ideas possible.
For the last critera, I gave myself C4, using the same example, once again from the egg drop experiment for working in groups. We all were quite respectful of each others opinions in general and refrained from using negative language when we hadn't agreed with another's ideas, instead, providing examples for how to improve their idea or politely telling them how it wouldn't work.
I gave an example of which I had respectfully disagreed with one of my group members, showing them how their idea wouldn't work as well as an example for what we could do as a group, to improve the design and create a more likelihood of the egg surviving the fall. However, even though I was able to give good advice and my respectful opinion on another, I was able to get some on mine, but as I stated previously, I wasn't able to give that much input in the discussion and needing to be taken into consideration in the future.
From my results in Semester 1 of 2023, below is my reflection for the first two terms and how I have demonstrated the 5 C's of Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Citizenship.
Creativity
Within Semester 1, there were numerous assignments and tasks which were given to me throughout all the subjects, allowing me to demonstrate my creativity. An example of this would be in English within term 1, where I was given an assignment to create either a short story or a vignette from any prompt or even from my own imagination. Although at the beginning, I was struggling to find a prompt to make a start and hung up upon the idea of a vignette being "too hard for the immense word count given" and having to create a short story. In the end, I decided that I would go upon writing a vignette, a new topic of which I could demonstrate my creative skills from creating a short descriptive scene of a painting. I wanted to approach this very creatively and think of a scenario with significance and writing the vignette with a literal meaning as well as a hidden, underlying, metaphorical and symolising meaning.
The final product of this English Assignment was based upon a traditional Japanese painting of a tree with poem slips hung upon its branches and a rock sitting beneath it. The description in the vignette symbolises a person walking up to the tree and sitting down on the rock in a somewhat reflective state, with the underlying meaning behind the true feelings of mother's and describing from the pain to the content that they may experience through undergoing their everyday experiences from being a teen into adulthood and motherhood. These were creatively hinted through the title as well as small hints throughout the short moment of the girl walking towards the tree as well as the reflective tone.
Critical Thinking
Not only this, but I have shown both the values of creative thinking and critical thinking within multiple assignments as all the five values intertwine with one another, which I am able to demonstrate throughout all of my tasks. An example of showing the value of critical thinking would be within Digital Technologies. My assignment was to create a website based on the product which we had produced earlier within Term 2. Through creating my website through the newly introduced languages of HTML and CSS to my class and having to create a website over the weekend, my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities were put to the test as I encountered numerous problems throughout the whole process of creating this website as it was a new topic. I was able to overcome this as I used external resources, such as the website with useful tips (given by my teacher) as well as google and my own understanding on coding through my common sense, figuring out solutions to the problems encountered by looking over my code. All these solutions used the skill of critical thinking and allowed me to be able to solve the problem and resulting in allowing me to gain an outstanding grade which was one that I was proud of.
Communication
As for the skill of communication, this is an important skill of have and was demonstrated majorly in English as I had a Socratic Seminar. This allowed me to demonstrate this skill as we were set up in designated groups, allowing us to contribute and listen to our peers and communicating our ideas with one another as a discussion, while the teacher listens in, guiding us and assessing us based on our communication skills. I was able to contribute my own ideas as well as linking onto my peer's ideas during this period. This is vital in maintaining the conversation as well as absorbing more information around the topic which we may not have been knowledgeable before the discussion. Additionally, not only did I perform my communication skill effectively orally, but I also conveyed it in written formals within every assignment from every subject that a written piece is needed, meaning that not only in English do I demonstrate this skill, but also Mathematics in the investigation, Science through practical reports etc.
Collaboration and Citizenship
Along with communication, the skill of collaboration is also quite closely linked to it and without one or the other, the skill would not be as effective. One example of this would be in Science, where we had a task where we needed to show our collaboration skills with our peers in order to create a product in the form of a journal with all our inputs and contributions into researching for the designated disease which our character in her scenario had as well as producing a video from the information that we had gathered. I have also shown my involvement within the school, displaying my skill of citizenship. I am able to play within an ensemble for the school as well as being able to be in music specialist, contributing to the school through the performances.
