After School SUCCESS Program
The Greenfield Union School District offers several programs that go beyond the instructional school day. These include:
After School SUCCESS Program
Migrant Program
California State Preschool Program
Before and After School Daycare Program
SUCCESS Program
“History & Background”
In July of 1999, the Greenfield District was awarded funds from the State of California to operate an after school program at each of its school sites. Guidelines for the program included a nutritional snack, help with homework, and an opportunity to participate in recreation or other enrichment activities. It was, and continues to be a State mandate that programs are open until 6:00 p.m. The money for State programs was allocated through legislation that was enhanced by the passing of Proposition 49 in 2006. The SUCCESS program was and continues to be supported by ELO-P & District funds, in-kind support of community partners, and other grant funded programs, and the support of the District's educational foundation.
“Our Vision”
The vision of Greenfield’s After School SUCCESS Program (ASSP) is to develop a cadre of young adults who are economically self-sufficient, have healthy family and social relationships and are contributors to the community in which they live. This vision is attuned to the District’s Mission that states the District is “preparing students for a life that is productive academically, physically, emotionally, socially, and economically.”
“Our Mission”
Leveling the playing field, building the capacity for young people to succeed.
“Program Components”
ASSP operates Monday through Friday from school dismissal time to 6:00 p.m. (with the exception of McKee Middle School which is open until 6:15 p.m. due to late dismissal), throughout the school year. ASSP staff remains with the students throughout the afternoon program, which includes snacks, homework and/or tutorial assistance, enrichment activities linked to core academic curriculum, recreation and prevention/intervention activities, and clubs. Participation in ALL program components is expected. ASSP enrolls students in TK - 5th Grade at all the elementary sites. ASSP also enrolls students in 6th - 8th Grade at all the middle school sites.
“Homework/Tutoring”
Students are provided with time daily to focus on homework and/or specific tutoring in math and/or reading. The time supports students as they complete assigned work as well as supporting students in reading and math. The ASSP makes no guarantee that homework will be completed or checked for accuracy during program time.
“Enrichment/Recreational Activities, Special Events, and Field Trips”
Students may have options to participate in enrichment activities that provide them with an opportunity to engage in meaningful, interesting, and exciting projects. Students may also select activities that are designed to promote positive youth development and appropriate social interactions. Special Events and Field Trips are designed to enhance the overall After School SUCCESS Program. Events are designed to promote learning and/or self-esteem. Students are included in planning the events and trips when appropriate.
“Attendance”
ASSP is NOT a drop-in program. Every student must have a completed registration packet to attend ASSP. All enrolled students are invited to participate and are required to attend five days per week until the end of program time. Parents who need to pick students up earlier must have an early release form on file with ASSP. Students with more than three (3) unexcused absences within a month will be removed from the program. Students with more than six (6) absences, excused or unexcused, within a month are at risk of being removed from the program. Students may be picked up as early as 3:30 pm at the elementary sites and 4:30 pm at the middle school sites without penalty as long as they have an early release form on file.
“Sports & Performing Arts Program”
The After School Education and Safety (ASES) Grant and Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) will continue to fund middle school sports based on the following requirements:
Students must enroll in the After School SUCCESS Program (ASSP) and attend five (5) days per week during the sports tryouts and sports season.
Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA). Grade checks are done before tryouts and during the season to ensure all students are maintaining above a 2.0 GPA. At the three (3) and six (6) week mark in each season, all grades are checked by the Site Director.
If at the three (3) and six (6) week marks, a student’s GPA is below a 2.0, that student will be benched (no practice, no games) until 2 consecutive weeks of grades at or above a 2.0 has been submitted to the Site Director. If after four (4) weeks, a student’s GPA has not improved to a 2.0 for two (2) consecutive weeks, the student will be dropped from the team. The student is responsible for getting grade checks completed and turned in to the Site Director.
“Sports & Performing Arts Program”
Participation in conditioning classes and/or intramural tournaments during the off-season or between sports will be offered.
If students elect to drop ASSP during the off-season, they may risk losing their spot in ASSP and therefore not being eligible to play for the following season.
Students with three (3) unexcused absences and/or six (6) or more absences (excused or unexcused) within a month will risk being dropped from the program and may not re-enroll for the remainder of the season or be placed on a wait-list.\
Once a roster has been submitted, no additional students can be added without the approval of the Site Director.
Students participating in Sports and Performing Arts are leaders and therefore are held accountable for their actions and behaviors both during the instructional day and during ASSP. If a student violates the behavior expectations from EITHER Instructional Day (Green Handbook) or ASSP (see p. 15-18), the following steps will ensue.
1st suspendable offense - The student will at a MINIMUM be benched for one (1) week upon return from suspension and will not participate in any/all practices/games/competitions during that time. ASSP reserves the right to remove the student from the team based on the severity of the 1st offense (See Behavior Expectations on p. 15-18).
2nd suspendable offense - The student will be removed from that team for the duration of the season.
