Key Information

The GCSE Art Craft & design course allows pupils to build on their strengths and to develop their own interests and skills using a wide range of media that can include great opportunities for mixed media working and including aspects such as photography, printmaking, stencilling etc. as well as a continuous development of drawing and painting.

Assessment

Assessment covers four key areas;

●      Artist Research

●      Development of Ideas

●      Recording Images (Drawing and annotation)

●      Final Outcome.

Pupil’s work is assessed through a combination of examination- an externally set task with 7 options (40%) and a portfolio (60%).  All work is internally assessed and externally checked and moderated by the exam board.

Subject information

All pupils who study Art will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques.  This will include study in at least two of the following areas:

• Fine art

• Graphic communication

• Textile design

• Three-dimensional design

• Photography

Students explore a range of ideas, materials and processes  in order to creatively and personally develop their knowledge and application of the skills learnt.  Students develop their own preferences for working and are able to journey through their ideas in forms appropriate to their intentions and investigations.  Within the 60% portfolio students will explore at least 2 themes/starting points.

Is this course right for me?

Pupils should have a keen interest in the visual world and have a passion for creating their own images and art objects.

Increasingly pupils and students have found ways to combine media in exciting and stimulating ways as a way of responding to the contemporary art world and the multimedia environment in which they live.

Underpinning all of the studies is an expectation that drawing and annotation will be used to record ideas.

What can this lead to?

1.     A Level Art and Design courses.

2.     Vocational Art and Design courses at college.

3.     Leading to Art and Design degree courses at University.

4.     Vast range of careers in the creative industries ranging from, Fashion, Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Film and TV, Fine Art, Illustration, Teaching, Conservation, Games design and Set design etc.
