LET'S CREATE POP UP LANDSCAPES!

Dear Year One,

As we find ourselves in the Summer term, it is a good moment to learn about LANDSCAPES and that some things are further away than other things. There is FOREGROUND (what is close), MIDDLEGROUND (What is a little further away) and BACKGROUND (What is very far away). Even on a flat piece of paper, there are techniques to showing this in art. For example, if I look out of my window I can see The Mont Blanc in the distance. (BACKGROUND) As it is so far away, it actually looks quite small! In fact if I hold my hand out, I could probably hold it in my hand! HOWEVER....I know that if I were to stand up very close to the Mont Blanc (FOREGROUND), it would be HUGE! I wouldn't even see its summit! It is the highest mountain in Europe and there is no way I would be able to hold it in my hand! We are going to therefore start examining something that is very important to know in art and that is.....the CLOSER things are, the BIGGER they seem. The FURTHER away things are, the SMALLER they seem. If you have a garden, balcony or just from looking from your window you can check to see if this is true. Compare the size of a similar type of tree that is close by and one that is far away...what happens? What about an aeroplane? When we see aeroplanes in the sky they look tiny, but we know that aeroplanes are actually very large.

Please watch the short youtube video by Cassie Stephens. She demonstrates fantastically how to make a pop-up ZIG ZAG landscape card which will help us to practice all that we have talked about above. She talks about LANDSCAPES having FOREGROUND, a MIDDLEGROUND and a BACKGROUND and how we can make a flat piece of art work look like it has DEPTH and SPACE.

YOU WILL NEED CARD/PAPER (PLAIN OR COLOURED)

CRAYONS

SCISSORS, GLUE, RULER

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR CARDS!

THIS IS THE LANDSCAPE VIEW FROM MY WINDOW. AREN'T WE SO BLESSED!

THIS WAS TAKEN ON MY WAY TO WORK THIS WINTER. CAN YOU SEE HOW THE TREES LOOK SO MUCH BIGGER THAN THE MONT BLANC BUT IT IS AN OPTICAL ILLUSION! NOW WE KNOW THAT THE ONLY REASON THE MONT BLANC LOOKS SMALLER IS BECAUSE IT IS FURTHER AWAY.
