The general staff responsibilities of Legacy designers, photographers, and writers are as follows:
Following the Style Guide and the How-to guides, design the spread to follow the theme of the book. If a template is to be used, be certain it stays within the style guide and photos still line up to the grid.
Attend events, use the best settings on your camera for each event, take many photos. Each event should have a shot list with suggested settings for best photos. When you return to school after the event, bring the camera back to the newsroom, import the photos to the Yearbook Server, place them in the correct folder, rename the photos to reflect the event, date, photographer’s name, etc., and RATE all photos on the 4 star system in Adobe Bridge.
Interview people in photos or related to events using a USB recorder. Type up interviews as soon as you return to class or during after school meeting. Choose the best quotes to use in captions and stories. Write stories using Feature Writing format. Write captions using Caption Writing Format.
The responsibilities of Legacy editors are as follows:
Editors will not work on pages during class. Editors will be moving around the room, assisting designers, writers, and directing photographers. Editors will make time after school, during lunch, or during independent study class periods to complete their own pages and edits of other pages. Sees that the yearbook’s production and writing run smoothly. Approves all text before it is placed on pages. Works with staff members to solve problems. Works with the advisor on planning and producing the yearbook. Is organized for editorial board meetings and class meetings. Sees that each deadline met on time. Works with photo editors, copy editors and layout designers to assure complete spreads by deadline. Helps keep staff on-task and motivated.
Strictly enforce copy and design style. Spends hours after school and in free time to help staff as needed. Participates enthusiastically and constructively.
Makes substantial content corrections and leaves clear, constructive criticism for writers. Finds and corrects the style and grammar errors. For each spread, editors will read the copy, make sure it’s up to the standards described in our Style Guide (page 12) and that it follows the Library How-to guides (page 13). Editors will confirm spelling of student names and grades. Editors will confirm facts with teachers or coaches (particularly with scores for games).
Evaluates staff each week to keep the advisor up-to-date before small problems become worse. Keeps fellow editors on-task after school.
Helps layout designers with any design problems. Evaluates other editors and does self-evaluations every other week. Collects whole staff self-evaluations and supplies them to the advisor.
The responsibilities of Legacy copy editors are as follows:
Copy editors help train new staff on best writing techniques for captions, headlines, and stories.
Help edit proofs
Look for spelling and grammatical errors, properly spelled names, correct grades for the interviewees
Check for quotes in each caption and story
Confirm the quality of overall coverage
The responsibilities of Legacy assignment editors are as follows:
Make certain the classroom calendar (physical and digital) stays up-to-date.
Add events and athletic contests to the primary calendar
Post story ideas, interview requests, events, photo assignments, and other activities into Basecamp.
Confirm that all assignments are chosen by staff members.
Get contacts for each club and student organization and check in with them regularly to get leads on new stories and events.
Coordinate Interviews that are needed and Interviews that have been completed
The responsibilities of Legacy photo editors are as follows:
Train new staff in care, maintenance, proper check in/out of equipment
Proper use of cameras and photojournalism techniques, including file storage and naming.
Confirm that all photos have been imported into the Yearbook Server using the proper file renaming, rated, and in the proper folders daily.
Check photos on each spread, making sure no one is facing off the page and that the best photos have been chosen.
Update the resolution (at least 350 dpi) and color mode (to CMYK) for each photo on each spread.
Confirm the Photo-bys are correct and color correct when needed.
The responsibilities of Legacy social media managers are as follows:
Updating the Instagram social media account for Legacy Yearbook.
Coordinate reporters attending events and covering the events through social media (i.e. going live on instagram during a pep rally).
Confirm with advisor that all coverage through social media will be school appropriate and newsworthy.
If no social media reporters are available for an event, social media managers will be expected to attend and cover the event themselves.
