The Path to Student Media at East View
Step 1: Start with AAVTC (Arts, Audio/Video Technology & Communications)
This is the foundation for all of East View’s student media programs. In AAVTC, students explore the history and importance of journalism in America while learning the fundamentals of communication in today’s digital world. Students build skills in:
News & Feature Writing – from current events to human interest stories
Photojournalism – capturing moments that tell a story
Broadcast & Multimedia – introductory video, audio, and editing skills
Media Ethics & Responsibility – learning how to report accurately and fairly
Students practice investigative skills, conduct interviews, research, write, and design their own media projects. By the end of the course, they’ve had hands-on experience across print, photo, broadcast, and digital platforms.
Step 2: Choose Your Advanced Track
Printing and Imaging Technology (Yearbook)
For students who want to design, write, and photograph the story of the year. In PIT, students become part of the Legacy Yearbook staff, gaining professional skills in:
Advanced Adobe InDesign & Photoshop
Visual storytelling and page design
Captioning and feature writing
Event coverage and photo assignments
Teamwork and leadership in a real newsroom environment
Yearbook students publish the book that lasts a lifetime — the Legacy Yearbook.
Newspaper (Liberty Gazette)
Right now, Liberty Gazette operates as an extracurricular, but with enough interest, it can return as a full class. Newspaper staffers learn to:
Report on news, sports, and features relevant to EVHS
Write editorials and opinion pieces that reflect student voices
Publish both in print and online formats
Explore multimedia journalism (photos, podcasts, and video news stories)
If you want your voice heard, we need YOU to bring the Gazette back to class.
WPAT Broadcasting For students who thrive on-camera or behind it, broadcasting offers real-world experience in video production. Students produce news, sports coverage, announcements, and features. They gain skills in:
Video shooting and editing
Scriptwriting for broadcast
Live and recorded studio production
On-air presence and communication skills
Step 3: Keep Growing
After starting in AAVTC, students can progress through multiple advanced levels of Yearbook, Newspaper, or Broadcasting (Year 1–3). Each level brings greater leadership responsibility, advanced technical training, and portfolio-quality work that can prepare students for college, careers in media, and beyond.
