The course allowed for the contextualization and examination of the relationship between the role of sports in pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial Africa and contemporary African societies. The complex relationship between sports and African societies allowed them to use sports for socio-economic development and fight those challenges along with liberation movements and colonial ideologies. Additionally, we examined how sport played a critical role in the South African anti-apartheid movement and to what extent international sports institutions play a critical role in pressuring states and acting as a political body by utilizing both media and traditional forms of negotiations. The course allows students to understand contemporary Africa through a sports evaluative lens.Â
