The course examines the extent of the role of media and communication in igniting or driving social, cultural, and political change. Using entertainment, traditional media, pre-digital media, and new media or social media, students looked at these developments through media theories and these effects on the public sphere, from citizenship to national and political identity. The course also sheds light on the use of the internet for economic growth while simultaneously limiting its use for political change in the MENA region by the governments, exploring the digital spaces and online communities that create safe spaces, or at times dangerous places for citizens, creating greater public engagement with issues.
