Daisy married Harold S. Read in 1943. She taught primary grades in Oregon for 41 years, 34 of which were spent teaching 1st grade in the Portland School District, before retiring in 1958. Daisy is the author of Springbrook — A Cooperative Community — Then and Now and My College Years: Memories of Long Ago (1978), a booklet in which she recalls her life at Pacific Academy and Pacific College. She lived at Friendsview Manor, and was the oldest George Fox alumna when she passed away in 1991.
Mrs. Daisy Newhouse Read was born in Minnesota in 1892. Her family moved to Oregon in 1894 and Daisy attended Pacific Academy from 1907-1910. Afterwards she attended Pacific College, graduating June 10, 1914 with a bachelor of arts degree in education with a specialization in History. As a student, Daisy spent seven years walking two miles on the often muddy railroad tracks from her Springbrook home to campus. This was an occasion for her first rain-repellent coat.
Tuition was an expensive $50 a semester, so Daisy took great care of her best dress: one of her mother’s dresses refashioned for her. Daisy reports that this store-bought dress was very special. She wore it for her graduation from Pacific Academy and then it was updated for her 1914 college graduation.
