•Wheel cart is a vehicle designed for transport, using two wheels.
•A cart is pulled or pushed by one or more people.
•Animals were used instead of men for pulling the car, because they can provide more power.
•Normally a cart was pulled by a pair of draught animals. The draught animals used for carts may be horses or ponies, oxen, donkeys, or even goats and large dogs.
•Carts have been mentioned in literature as far back as the second millennium B.C.
•You would have heard about the Indian epic Mahabharat which depicts Lord Krishna as the ‘Sarathi’ (the Charioteer) of the ‘Rath’ (Chariot) carrying Arjuna, in the battle field of Kurukshetra. Chariots were commonly used for transport by historical rulers in India.
Types of Carts
• Animals have been in continuous use since the invention of the wheel. Carts may be named for the animal that pulls them, such as ‘horse cart’, ‘oxcart’ or bullock cart.
•In modern times, horse carts are used in competitions as well as for transporting people.
•A bullock cart or oxcart is a two-wheeled vehicle pulled by oxen. It is a means of transportation used since ancient times in many countries. They are still used today where modern vehicles are too expensive or the infrastructure does not favour them.
•Bullock carts are used especially for carrying goods and it is pulled by one or two bulls. The cart is attached to a pair of bulls by a rope fitted to yokes. The driver sit on the front of the cart, while the load is placed at the back.
Horse Power
How many men would be needed to equal the power of a Horse?
It was found that, on an average 10 -12 men were needed to equal the power of one Horse. This is the reason why mankind thought of using Horses for pulling the cart. This led to the development of a Horse Carriage.
