Battle of the Books
Battle of Books is a club where students compete against each other with their knowledge of certain books. The students have to read 16 books this year and will be asked questions about them during competitions. There are teams of 12 people, and this year it is very competitive because there are a lot of students competing for those 12 spots (Over 40 people!). There’s a leaderboard for Battle of Books that tells you if you’re in the top 12. To get there, you need to practice your questions on a site that quizzes you on the books. For now, we are just reading books and practicing on our accounts. The meetings are held in the media center on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM.
Chess Club
Chess Club students have been advancing in their understanding of the game and skills when it comes to making decisions and choices in the game of chess.
Debate Club
Debate Club is a club that is sponsored by Ms. Dennis (adult supervisor). We meet every Tuesday evening from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. As the captains, Bina Rizal and Rohan Dayal will lead it in the 2026-2027school year. In the debate club, there are many sections, including “Interpretations”, “Extemporaneous”, “Public Forum”, and “Original Oratory”. In “Interpretations”, the club receives a script and gets time to memorize the script to perform it at a competition, either as a duo or solo. Depending on which “Interpretation" you choose, there are 3 categories: dramatic, humorous, and duo. In “Extemporaneous,” you are given a topic to research on competition day, and you are given a question and 30 minutes to create a speech. In “Original Oratory”, you are given a prompt, and you have to create a 10-minute speech on it, and you have to memorize your speech. In a “Public Forum”, you debate another team on a pre-given topic. This is the standard debate that people think of when they hear “debate”. This club participates in many competitions, including the Regional, State, and National Speech and Debate Competitions.
Vespa Strings
In Vespa Strings, players play folk tunes, jazz, and pop music with Dr. Blanton. They learn to play music that Dr. Blanton has arranged and improve playing rhythms, double stops, slurs, faster notes, and more. In this club, you can play many genres of songs, such as fiddle tunes and folk songs. The students have a chance to perform around the community with other members of the club. Vespa Strings meets before school on Wednesdays from 8:10 AM to 8:50 AM.
First Lego League
FLL is a competitive robotics club that stands for First Lego League. In this club, we make and code a robot to complete missions on a map. This year’s theme for FLL is Masterpiece, which is based on the idea of STEAM, and more specifically, art. This year, the theme is “BioGlow” with a focus on nature, ecology, and environmental science, particularly revolving around rainforests, topography, and interconnected ecosystems. There are four main parts: “Robot Run”, “Robot Design”, “Innovation Project”, and “Core Values”. Robot Run is the most well-known part of FLL. In Robot Run, the team will code a robot and create attachments to complete missions on a map. Robot Design goes hand in hand with the Robot Run, which is just designing and coding the robot. Robot Design is just a way to show your work and progress with your robot. In an Innovation project, the team creates an original idea and a way to share it. This idea will be something that will help the community, and a simple way to present it.
Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is a club where you answer questions on different topics like geography, history, math, science, literature, sports, etc. This club is very competitive, and you are put in teams of 4-5. These 5 teams are assigned letters ranging from A-E, which determines your skill level/performance in practice. When teams compete, it’s usually two opposing teams who play against each other to see who can answer a specific question first. To answer questions, there’s a buzzer system to show who tried to answer first, and it is timed. The quicker you answer questions, the more you can get different things like powers or bonuses. Powers happen when you answer a question before a certain point in the question. For every toss-up you get right, you and your team get 3 bonus opportunities that do not have powers, so you should wait until the end to answer.
Math Club
Math Club is a club where you practice and perfect the math skills that you want to improve yourself on. You have to be able to be willing to solve difficult math problems efficiently and creatively. Many varieties of questions are asked. The topics covered during class can be applied to school math, and a lot of students have found that the math club has helped them solve hard math problems in a variety of ways. You are usually assigned homework, about 10 questions every week, and then they are reviewed by our parent coaches. Not only do they provide a neat explanation, but any additional math questions are always answered. They recently had a competition on February 1, where the Lincoln team(Zixin (Alan) He, Pratham Gupta, Shahwat Mohan, Yizhe (Alex) Zhu) secured the trophy for the 7th year in a row, with 14 years of excellence in total. The top two highest scorers in the competition were Benjamin Chen and Lakshya Khowala. The Lincoln team will be going to the State Competition in the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics to hopefully win there, too.
The Hornet Buzz
The Hornet Buzz is all about writing and creating an e-magazine in the library. This is a club where you improve your writing so it can be understandable and well-developed in many categories. They write the newspaper, and there are three sections, each run a part of it. There are the Student Interactive, School Informative, and World Intuitive Departments. The Student Information Department interacts with the students by interviewing them. They also write about things students would find entertaining, like TikTok and memes, in the “Just for Fun” section. The School Information Department writes about the clubs and performing arts, explaining what they are doing and what they are. They also give out surveys to post results the next time the newspaper gets published, and important dates. It is run by the teacher Ms. Olson, and 8th graders Willow Wu and Pralove Shah. Ironically, we are the ones writing what you are seeing (along with the other writers in the Meet the Editors page).
Beautification Club
Join the Beautification Club every other Wednesday at 8:15 to help out with beautifying our school. They help fix up the school so it can be a better place for all of us.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an extracurricular club focused on playing jazz-style music. It is hosted weekly on Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:50 AM. In jazz, contrary to the regular band, students play blues scales and music whose rules heavily differ. Jazz band music focuses on stronger articulations, uneven rhythms, and dissonant/jazz harmonic notes. The Jazz band has opportunities to perform in festivals and competitions. Some pieces being learned currently include The Wayfaring Stranger, Mack the Knife, Ants in the Pants, and Bye Bye Blackbird. They will play a select few of these for MPA and Carowinds, two places that they will go with the Festival Band.
Odyssey Of the Mind
OM is a club about creativity and innovation. There are two parts to it: long-term and spontaneous. For the long term, our team will choose one problem out of 5 to solve. The first problem will always be a vehicle problem (building a vehicle), the second one always deals with technology (building a robot, coding), the third one is a classics problem (a classic piece of literature), the fourth one is structure (building a structure), and the fifth one is drama. Spontaneous is the second portion of OM; you don’t know what problem you’re going to solve.
Heritage Club
Heritage Club is all about the culture, language, customs, and more. As the president, Bina Rizal will lead it in the 2026-2027 school year. Come share your culture with all of us. We do cultural presentations and planning for the huge Heritage Festival that will happen in 2027. Get into groups and work on a presentation about your chosen country. You'll have plenty of time to prepare it with your friends. On presentation day, bring some food from that country and share it with all the club members. We have several planning committees to make our future festival a cultural blast.
Design Club
The design club is currently led by Akshit Sinha, Sruthi Kalapatu, Shaarav Kamdar, Anvika Sesetty, Diyasri Parthiban, and Aarav Manjule. The design club focuses on designing logos and creating art. This club is sponsored by Mrs. Arante, a middle school art teacher. This club is hosted in the art room, where they make amazing dreams come into reality through artwork and designs.
Future City
In Future City, we build a futuristic city based on the theme of that year. We build the city using things that we bring from home. Everyone should contribute as much as they can to make our future city a success. Through cooperation, preparation, and commitment, we can do anything. The future awaits us.
Mock Trial
During the mock trial, the students have been working on their first case: Goldilocks. Everyone is separated into two sides, with two groups on each side. One side is prosecution, while the other is defense. The attorneys are finishing up their direct and cross-examination questions and preparing for trial.
Yearbook Club
This club allows 7th and 8th-graders to make a yearbook for our school. It is very similar to Hornet Buzz because both involve writing and other factors. Hornet Buzz, on the other hand, focuses on diverse topics, while Yearbook Club focuses on the school year as a whole. This club is sponsored by Mrs. Zuleta.
