Grapevine Elementary

Monday Message

GES Families,

Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year at Grapevine Elementary! I am principal, Nancy Hale, and this is the start of my 11th year at GES and 5th year as principal. I absolutely love my job and consider it a privilege to lead our campus and serve our community. It is extra special for me to be able to bring two of my three children to school with me each day. Walker will be starting kindergarten this year and McKinley is going into third grade. Our daughter, Charley, attends the district daycare and can't wait to be a star in 2 more years!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful summer and were able to relax, recharge, explore, and vacation with your children. Our family spent a few weeks in Atlantic Beach, Florida visiting with my family and then a few days in Orlando to see friends and take the kids to a few days at Disney. It was a good balance of relaxation and fun between the beach and the parks.

With the exception of a few weeks off, the leadership team has been hard at work this summer preparing for a WILD adventure this year! We can't wait to see everyone back and get students back in our building. It's too quiet sometimes in the summer and we need energy back in the building! We have a great week of professional development planned for our staff this week so they can be fully prepared to meet all the needs of our students this school year. Our theme for the year is "WILD about Engagement" and we look forward to engaging our students and families in all aspects of their educational experience.

Part of that engagement involves communicating effectively via this newsletter each week. We will send it each Monday unless we are off school, in which case it may be sent out on Tuesday. Thank you for taking the time to read through the newsletter carefully so you can be prepared for the start of the year. We value parent partnership in your child's education and want to keep you informed. We hope you will join our PTA and take advantage of volunteer opportunities around campus, as well!

We look forward to seeing you all at Meet the Teacher! You can find more details below.

All my best,

Mrs. Hale

Campus News and Announcements

Please save the date for Meet the Teacher 2023! School begins next week on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023 so we will have Meet the Teacher on Thursday night, August 10, 2023 from 5:00-6:30pm. This is a come and go event, so feel free to stop in when your schedule allows. Meet your new teacher, see your new classroom, reconnect with friends, and bring your supplies to leave in your classroom!

All families who have completed the registration process and submitted all necessary documents will receive an email from your child's new teacher on Thursday morning! (If you are missing items, you would have received an email or call from our front office.)

Our PTA will be set-up in the cafeteria with various tables and opportunities for families to join the PTA, check out our PTA sponsored clubs and more! Families who purchased a School Supply Pack may pick-up in the gym and take the supplies to their classroom.

We also encourage all families to print their "First Day of School" visitor badge at our kiosks while on campus. (See below for more info.)

First Day of School

Walking your child to class on the first day of school is a time-honored tradition. We want all of our families that choose to be able to walk their child to class on Tuesday, Aug. 15th and take pictures before giving their kids a big hug and wishing them a great day! However, we need your help! In order to safely have all visitors in the building, EVERYONE (over the age of 18) will need to Raptor in at our kiosks in the vestibule. In an effort to alleviate long lines on the first morning of school, we are allowing families to print their "First Day of School" visitor badge in advance. You may do this at Meet the Teacher on Thursday, Aug. 10 from 5:00 - 6:30 OR on Monday, Aug. 14 from 8:00-4:00pm. You will simply scan your ID and print the badge, then hold onto it until Tuesday morning. When you arrive on campus Tuesday, please plan to wear your badge on your shirt where it can be visible to all staff and have your photo ID available as you enter the building so we can ensure it matches the badge. We will have plenty of staff at the main foyer entrances to allow all those with a printed badge to enter quickly. We appreciate your support and cooperation as we continue this tradition in a safe manner for all students and staff.

Independence Day this year will be on Wednesday, Aug. 16th! Families will be able to walk their children to the foyer entrances and send them off into the building independently from there. We will have lots of adults stationed and ready to help escort students to their classrooms.

Volunteering

We LOVE our volunteers at GES! This year we are encouraging all families who plan to come to campus and interact with students to go ahead and complete the background check. Volunteers must complete this EACH YEAR beginning in August! It can take 1-2 weeks for your background check to clear. If you plan to be a guest reader, volunteer at a class party, chaperone a field trip, volunteer with PTA, open car doors with our Dad's Club, etc. you will need a completed Background Check!

The following link takes you to the online Volunteer Handbook and background check: https://www.gcisd.net/o/gcisd/page/volunteer-background-check

In order to volunteer at GES, or around GCISD, all volunteers must:

When you are ready to volunteer at GES, feel free to call the front office at 817-251-5735 to verify that both of the required steps have been recorded as completed. We appreciate your support as you complete these steps and volunteer to work with our GES students.

Lunch Visitors

Lunch guests will sign-in through our secure vestibule with a valid ID, stop by the front office to check-in and receive a visitor badge, and then meet their GES star at the entrance to the cafeteria. Families will have the option to sit outside in the picnic table area for lunch or in our cafeteria at an empty table near the windows. Parents are welcome to bring in outside food when having their lunch with their child. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation.

The Sign-up Genius for lunches will begin the week of August 28th. A link will be available next week in the Monday Message.

Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with Nancy. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 picnic table together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. Lunch visitors may only eat with their child or student. You may not invite friends to sit with you when coming for lunch.

Summer Reading Challenge

Last year our school theme was “G.A.M.E.S.” which stood for “Goals And Motivation Equal Success.” Our students worked very hard to improve their reading by setting individual goals and then working to achieve them. In an effort to keep the momentum going into the summer, we encouraged students to maintain their current end of year reading level as a summer reading challenge.

We cannot wait to start checking in with our students as they begin a new year to see how did on their summer challenge! Any students who maintained their reading level from the end of last year into August of this year will get to pick a book from our book machine!

This is a live Google Calendar that we will keep updated throughout the year with campus activities. Click the calendar to open it up so you can switch to week or month view and look at future dates. Please check back frequently for new additions.

A Message from our PTA President

Welcome back, GES families!

I hope everyone had an amazing summer! I am excited to see everyone again, and I can't wait to meet all of the new faces at GES this year. We have a wonderful year of fun events planned and we hope you will all plan to join us in the Cafeteria at Meet the Teacher on August 10th.

I also love watching the children meet their reading goals and getting a new book from the Book vending machine,

2022 - 2023 PTA Accomplishments

Over the summer our leadership team was able to reflect on our 22-23 PTA accomplishments.  We raised $95,830, had over 600 members, and logged over 2,100 volunteer hours! We had many amazing in school and evening programs for our students and families and awarded over $11,000 in classroom and capital improvement grants. We are grateful for all of our leaders, members, volunteers, and donors.  Please join PTA for the 2023 - 2024 school year so we can accomplish even more!

GCISD News

Safety Lockers on Campus

New this year, the Grapevine Police Department has installed two equipment safes in our campus where they are able to store essential tools for a rapid response. The safes do not contain firearms. They are only accessible by Grapevine Police personnel and will remain locked. We just wanted to keep you informed of this new safety measure as the GPD continues to serve and support our schools.

You may see them on campus. We have one located in our teacher workroom and one in the 5th grade vestibule. We know our students may have questions and you are welcome to talk with them about it if you choose. Our response at school if asked by students about the lockers will be, "they contain equipment for the police to help keep us safe."
