Grapevine Elementary

Monday Message

Dear GES Families,

We hope that you will be able to join us this evening as we wrap up our One School, One Book program with an author visit from Suzanne Selfors! While she had to cancel our in person visit due to illness, she still wanted to offer this opportunity to our students and we figured in the evening when everyone could join would be a great option!

Please hop on the Webex with us and feel free to ask questions in the chat if there is something your child would really like to know at the end of her sharing.

Campus News and Announcements

Increase in Illness

We are seeing an increase in student and staff illness. It is the time of year when we frequently hear of students with head colds and fevers. Please help us stop the spread of illness by reminding your children of good hygiene habits such as washing their hands frequently with soap and water, sneezing or coughing into their elbow, etc. We also ask that you keep your children at home when they have fever, severe cough, difficulty breathing, or vomiting. Students should be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication in order to return to school.

Book Fair - Feb. 12 - 15

We hope you will join us this week for our Book Fair! Students will preview on Monday and shopping times can be found below for Tuesday-Thursday!

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

Mrs. Wahpekeche is looking for volunteers to help support our Book Fair the week of Feb. 12-15. We need parents who are willing to help run cash machines, help students while shopping, and clean-up. If you have completed your Background Check and are able to volunteer, please sign up HERE

There are several open spots available on Thursday!!

Lunch with a Loved One - 2/13-2/15

This year we will be hosting Lunch with Loved One in combination with our February Book Fair! This is an opportunity to come eat with your child and shop the Book Fair during lunch hours. Please refer to the February lunch sign-up to reserve a time HERE. We will have the picnic tables on the patio available (weather permitting) and be setting up additional tables and chairs based on the number of families we have signed up each day. As a friendly reminder, when you come for lunch it is to sit with your child and to shop the book fair with your child only. We will not be permitting friends to go with other students or families to the book fair. We hope you will be able to join us!

Book Fair E-Wallet and Online Book Fair

Sending kids to school with money can be stressful. Click here to view our Book Fair Dashboard, which contains the link for e-wallets! You can load book fair money directly on the site, which will sync with our book fair registers. It's a win-win! You can also access our online book fair, which is great when we can't find or we sell out of a book at our in-person book fair. Happy reading!

SRO Appreciation Day

Thursday, Feb. 15th is SRO Appreciation Day! We are so appreciative for Office Weber and all the ways he keeps us safe here at GES. He is regularly present at arrival, dismissal, lunches, and recess on a daily basis. Your family may want to consider making a card or sending a message of thanks to Officer Weber.

No School - Feb. 16 & 19

Just a friendly reminder that on Friday, Feb. 16th we are off from school for a Bad Weather make-up day that we didn't need to use.

In addition, on Monday, Feb. 19th the students have off for a student holiday while the teachers are in Professional Development.

We hope you enjoy the 4 day weekend!

School Starts at 7:40am

We have had an increase in the number of tardies over the past month. Please ensure that you are dropping your children off by 7:35am so that they are able to make it to their classrooms by 7:40am. We begin announcements immediately after the bell and we don't want students to feel rushed or miss our morning announcements.

Campus Activities and Events

This is a live Google Calendar that we will keep updated throughout the year with campus activities. Click the calendar to open it up so you can switch to week or month view and look at future dates. Please check back frequently for new additions.

Repeated Information

One School One Book Wrap-up

Thank you so much for supporting our One School One Book reading this year! We hope your family enjoyed the time reading together and you will continue the tradition in your home moving forward. There are 2 more books in the Wedgie and Gizmo series, too! If you borrowed a book from the school that is labeled with GCISD, please kindly return to your homeroom teacher by Friday, February 9th.

Sadly, our author visit on Friday was canceled because our author woke up sick on Friday. We were so disappointed as I know the students and staff had been looking forward to this day. Unfortunately, she lives out of state so we will work with her to see if there is an opportunity to reschedule.

Our final class winner last week for turning in the most trivia slips was Mrs. Helms class! They enjoyed a day with Gizmo on Thursday.

Lastly, we wanted to share that the winner of our school vote for favorite character was WEDGIE by only 2 votes! Students who visited the library over the past 2 weeks had the opportunity to cast their vote for Team Wedgie or Team Gizmo. It was a close competition but Wedgie won!

February Character Quality -- HONESTY

For the month of February, guidance and some Circle Up classroom conversations will focus on HONESTY. This can be defined as "living truthfully in your words, actions, and thoughts. Families can partner with GES by browsing this Family Connection Newsletter and discuss and/or participate in some of the suggestions. Homeroom teachers will nominate one student for each homeroom class that exemplifies HONESTY in a big way or shows the most growth in this character quality this month.

Volunteers Needed for Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten team would love to have a few volunteers who can come in on a  regular basis during their Shine time from 10:00-10:45 (any day of the week you are free) and support our students who need additional help with their reading skills. We are looking to have volunteers pull students individually or in small groups to practice the skills that we send home for homework. Some families aren't able to practice at home and this will help our students who may need that extra time and practice. If you have completed your background check and are able to help at least 1 day per week, please contact Nancy.Hale@gcisd.net to get started.

Animal Shelter Donations

In honor of our beloved OSOB characters, Wedgie and Gizmo, our Student Council has organized a donation drive for the Grapevine Animal Shelter. They are collecting donations in the GES foyer over the next 2 weeks that they will deliver to the shelter on Saturday, Feb. 17th. We would love your family's support if you're able! Some of the needed items include:

April 8 - Total Solar Eclipse

We are excited to share that GCISD applied and received a grant through the Perot Museum to get glasses for all our students and staff to safely view the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8th. As I'm sure you have heard, Grapevine is in the Zone of Totality and we will get to experience the Total Solar Eclipse during the afternoon. We will be sharing with our students about the eclipse leading up to the event and plan to take all our students outside that afternoon.

Do I Need to Submit a Transfer Request?

The general and STEM student transfer application window for the 2024-2025 school year will open on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 8 am. Online applications will be accepted through Friday, February 16, 2024, at 4 pm.

Transfer Window Dates

Students who are already approved on a transfer and are not moving to the next transition level do NOT need to submit a transfer request. For more information and to complete an online application on or after Monday, February 5, click here.

IMPORTANT: Please know that incomplete applications (e.g. missing residency documents) will NOT be processed during this round of student transfers. It is very important that families have all the needed documents when submitting transfer applications.

Valentine's Day Celebrations

Teachers will be planning fun activities for their students to do related to Valentine's Day throughout the next few weeks. Students are encouraged to bring Valentines cards and/or treats to exchange with their friends. Please do NOT send any peanut products as students will have the opportunity to open their boxes in class. Please refer to your grade level newsletters for specifics in your child's class.

GCISD Calls May Bond Election

At its January 22 school board meeting, the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees voted to call a bond election that will be on the May 4 ballot. Registered voters residing within the GCISD boundaries will be asked to consider a $150 million bond referendum that would generate funding to address aging conditions, such as replacements for roofs, electrical, plumbing, lift stations, and heating and air conditioning equipment. The propositions also address safety and security updates, technology infrastructure, device replacement for the district’s 1:1 program, buses, equipment updates for several student programs, and equipment improvements at the GCISD Swim Center. The GCISD total tax rate is the lowest it’s been in 25 years, and the tax rate is not expected to increase as a result of the 2024 bond.

GCISD officials will schedule informational meetings to share details and answer questions.  As soon as those meetings are finalized, information will be shared through the district’s regular communication channels. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to visit www.GCISD.net/bond for more information.

Growth and Development for Fourth Grade Girls and Fifth Grade

In order to be proactive in our delivery of education concerning human sexuality, our district uses several resources and programs for the elementary school health curriculum. Starting February 4, 2024 through February 17, 2024 parents may preview these videos from a non-district device by following the directions below:

These videos present basic information about male and female reproductive anatomy and functioning - and the physical and psychological changes that are a normal part of growing up. Growing Up! For Boys (shown to 5th grade boys only) provides advice on health, hygiene and good grooming.  It points to sources of reliable information and fosters the self-esteem that comes with accepting new responsibilities. Growing Up! For Girls (shown to 5th grade girls only) takes a realistic look at the responsibilities of adulthood and promotes dialogue with trusted adults, promoting self-confidence as girls face the challenges of change and growth.

Books & Bundts

We are excited to share a new opportunity with you as we continue to encourage our students to become avid readers! Nothing Bundt Cakes is partnering with local schools to provide students an incentive for reading nightly! Research shows the success of students who spend 20 minutes each night reading. Through the Books and Bundts program, we want to continue to encourage and promote nightly reading for our star students!

Simply complete this FORM showing 400 minutes read each month for homework and take it to our local Nothing Bundt Cake in Southlake to redeem for a free Bundtlet! Printed copies are available in our secure vestibule or may be requested through your homeroom teacher if needed. Thank you for continuing to encourage your child to spend time reading every night!

Lunch Visitors

Lunch Visitors

Lunch guests will sign-in through our secure vestibule with a valid ID, stop by the front office to check-in and receive a visitor badge, and then meet their GES star at the entrance to the cafeteria. Families will have the option to sit outside in the picnic table area for lunch or in our cafeteria at an empty table near the windows. Parents are welcome to bring in outside food when having their lunch with their child. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation.

Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with Nancy. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 picnic table together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. Lunch visitors may only eat with their child or student. You may not invite friends to sit with you when coming for lunch.

You can sign-up for lunch from Feb. 1 - 29 HERE

Volunteering

Volunteering

We LOVE our volunteers at GES! This year we are encouraging all families who plan to come to campus and interact with students to go ahead and complete the background check. Volunteers must complete this EACH YEAR beginning in August! It can take 1-2 weeks for your background check to clear. If you plan to be a guest reader, volunteer at a class party, chaperone a field trip, volunteer with PTA, open car doors with our Dad's Club, etc. you will need a completed Background Check!

The following link takes you to the online Volunteer Handbook and background check: https://www.gcisd.net/o/gcisd/page/volunteer-background-check

In order to volunteer at GES, or around GCISD, all volunteers must:

When you are ready to volunteer at GES, feel free to call the front office at 817-251-5735 to verify that both of the required steps have been recorded as completed. We appreciate your support as you complete these steps and volunteer to work with our GES students.
