Writing at Bankhead
Writing at Bankhead
At Bankhead, Writing is integrated across the curriculum. Children receive one formal taught writing lesson per week but writing is also integrated into daily reading opportunities. Writing across the week is broken up into:
Writing - One formal writing lesson is taught per week. Children are taught two genres per term, and are assessed at 3 key points throughout the year. Writing and daily writing opportunities are planned around the Writing Assessment Criteria, which teachers use to assess children's learning at 3 key points throughout the year.
Daily Writing - Through various Reading exercises, children are taught to use Daily Writing to express their ideas and use what they have read to inspire their writing. Children are taught how to justify and given evidence to support their written work, as well as key vocabulary used to construct their responses.
Write on Track - Write on Track is taught 3 times per week, in teaching sprints of 3 or 6 weeks. Children are taught key skills in Tools for Writing, in order to improve their skills and knowledge in sentence science and how sentences are structured e.g. tense, verb agreement, elements of a sentence.
Picture a Day - At least 3 times per week, children are given free writing opportunities, using a picture as stimulus. Children can choose to use the structured supports given to them, or to make up their own short written pieces.
