February 2024 - With the theme “Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain”, this year’s National Arts Month is directed towards both engaging various sectors in the pursuit of creative arts and fostering a more inclusive and progressive Bayang Malikhain.
In this light, the ADNU Creative Endeavors Council launched the first-ever “BUKLAD: Ateneo de Naga University Arts and Culture Festival" on 12-14 & 16 February 2024.
The Bikol word "buklad" or biklad (var.) means “to spread out, unfold, unfurl” (Mintz & Britanico, 1985). In the growing propensity for self-absorption and alienation of today’s modern generation, artists among others should continue, if not strengthen the efforts in unfurling vast multifarious narratives and in unfolding artistry, especially at times of creative outpouring and bountiful harvest to help recognize the value of culture and the arts woven in every fiber of Bikolano identity and realize the significant roles in shaping Bikol’s creative landscape.
In celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of Prof. Juan Ragragio, a highly esteemed Bikolano professor, playwright, and dramatist who intertwined Bikolano identity with theater arts, the Office of the Creative Endeavors Council organized a piano recital titled “Dinggin” at Arrupe Convention Hall, Ateneo de Naga University on June 20, 2024.
The guest performer in the event was his daughter, Daisy Ragragio-Valenciano, an alumna of Philippine Madrigal Singers, and the recital pianist was her son and Prof. Juan’s grandson, Jose Juan Francisco Marco Ragragio Valenciano who performed works by Liszt, Escare, and Sondheim.
The recital emphasized that despite the ability of AI to mimic human intelligence and behavior, it still lacks the faculty to reproduce works that can penetrate our hearts and soul and only artists and musicians are capable of doing so.
Carrying his grandfather’s legacy and creativity with him, Marco Ragragio Valenciano aspires to reawaken our dormant interests in humanities and the arts for everyone has a literary story to create and share.
