The following vocabulary words will be used in class throughout this unit. Some of the words you may recognize from previous grade levels, other words may be new to you! Remember to keep up with the vocabulary cards containing these words that we have put in the Matter and Energy section of your science notebook.
- Condensation - the changing of a gas into a liquid by cooling
- Density - how tightly the particles of a substance or object are packed together
- Dissolve - when a substance is no longer visible as it is mixed evenly in a liquid
- Energy - ability to do work (sound, solar, light, electrical, heat, nuclear, wind, chemical)
- Electrical Energy - a form of power created by the movement of charged particles
- Magnetism - the pulling force between an object and a magnet
- Mass - the amount of matter in something
- Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space
- Mixtures - two or more materials that keep their same properties when combined
- Physical Properties - anything you can observe about an object by using your senses
- Relative Density (Sink/Float) - Amount of mass in a substance or object
- Sound Energy - a series of vibrations that can be heard
- States of Matter - a state of matter that is described as a solid, liquid, or gas
- Solutions - special mixtures formed when a material dissolves in a liquid and cannot be filtered out
- Temperature - measurement of how much heat something contains
- Volume - the amount of space occupied by matter
