Objectives

Unit 3

Each lesson has several objectives, or goals, that we will try to master by the end of the lesson. Below are some of the objectives for our Force, Motion, and Energy unit.

By the end of the Energy Sources lesson, you will know:

• the forms of energy including mechanical, sound, electrical, light, and thermal
• different forms of energy have different functions
• ways to remember the forms of energy, including acronyms
• energy is found in both living and nonliving things
• more than one type of energy can be present at a time
• energy can be transformed

By the end of the Energy Sources lesson, you will be able to:

• differentiate between the different forms of energy
• connect investigations, academic vocabulary, and various stimuli to strengthen conceptual connections
• analyze and interpret varied stimuli to identify the form of energy depicted
• discuss how some objects create more than one form of energy
• discuss how everyday objects produce or use different forms of energy

By the end of the Electrical Circuits lesson, you will know:

• how to build electric circuits
• how electricity flows through a circuit
• ways to operate more than one component in a circuit
• The difference between series and parallel circuits

By the end of the Electrical Circuits lesson, you will know:

• build simple electric circuits to operate light bulbs and motors
• build circuits that can operate more than one component
• build circuits that can operate more than one component when one of the components is removed from the flow of electricity
• apply knowledge of electrical circuits to products used in everyday life

By the end of the Conductors and Insulators lesson, you will know:

• conductors are objects/ substances that allow energy to flow through it easily
• insulators are objects/ substances that do not allow energy to flow through easily
• what materials make good conductors of energy
• what materials make good insulators of energy
• insulators are not sources of thermal energy
• not all conductors are metal

By the end of the Conductors and Insulators lesson, you will know:

• test and observe the differences between conductors and insulators
• communicate and justify their thinking in differentiating between conductors and insulators
• analyze and classify a variety of visuals as insulators or conductors of thermal and electrical energy
• make connections of how we use conductors and insulators in our daily lives

By the end of the Effects of Force lesson, you will know:

• what a descriptive investigation is
• how to conduct an investigation
• gravity and magnetism are forces that influence the way objects move
• that it is important to use the same variables when conducting an investigation
• how friction is the force that resists the motion of objects on different surfaces.
• how to design an experiment using the forces of push, pull, friction and gravity.

By the end of the Effects of Force lesson, you will know:

• explore the effects of the forces of push, pull, gravity, and magnetism on objects.
• investigate how friction is the force that resists the motion of objects on different surfaces.
• design an investigation using the forces of push, pull, friction and gravity.
• discuss appropriate lab safety before conducting an investigation.
• use different scientific tools and materials appropriately when conducting an investigation.
