Objectives

Unit 4

Each lesson has several objectives, or goals, that we will try to master by the end of the lesson. Below are some of the objectives for our Earth's Patterns unit.

By the end of the Water Changes and Predictions lesson, you will know:

• weather conditions can be observed and measured
  • precipitation (rain gauge)
  • clouds
  • wind speed and direction (anemometer, wind vane, windsock)
  • temperature (thermometer)
• weather conditions can be recorded in charts, tables, graphs, and maps
• weather data can be used to make predictions about future weather conditions

By the end of the Water Changes and Predictions lesson, you will be able to:

• measure weather conditions using scientific tools
• record weather conditions
• make predictions about future weather conditions
• make observations, interpret and analyze data, and justify thinking using varied stimuli
• connect learning to real-world experiences

By the end of the Water On and Above the Land lesson, you will know:

• water goes through the processes of condensation, evaporation, and precipitation
• the Sun is the major source of energy in the water cycle
• evaporation, condensation, and precipitation occurs when the physical properties of water are changed by heating and cooling.
• what the arrows mean on models and diagrams of the water cycle

By the end of the Water On and Above the Land lesson, you will be able to:

• discuss what the arrows mean when observing water cycle visuals
• differentiate the processes of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
• explain the role of condensation, evaporation, and precipitation in the water cycle.
• create models to show that water is continuously moving throughout the water cycle.

By the end of the Patterns of the Moon lesson, you will know:

• there is an observable pattern of the appearance of the Moon over time
• the pattern is visible through the increasing and decreasing illumination of the Moon each month
• how the appearance of the moon changes over a month’s time.

By the end of the Patterns of the Moon lesson, you will be able to:

• observe and record how the appearance of the moon changes over a month/ 28-day cycle.
• show how the appearance of the Moon changes over time using a variety of visuals
• predict the appearance of the Moon based on data analysis

By the end of the Patterns with Shadows lesson, you will know:

• there are predictable patterns with shadows
• how shadows are created
• how shadows change as a result of the sun’s position in the sky

By the end of the Patterns with Shadows lesson, you will be able to:

• observe and record findings during different times to understand patterns of change
• observe and record how shadows are created and how shadow patterns change
• explain how shadows look different at different times of the day

By the end of the Patterns with Seasons lesson, you will know:

• characteristics of the seasons
• patterns of change that are observed in each season.

By the end of the Patterns with Seasons lesson, you will be able to:

• collect data on Earth’s seasons.
• analyze data to identify sequences in Earth’s seasons.
• predict patterns of change in the seasons.
