My coachee wanted more meaningful data from her kindergarteners. She was frustrated that she did not have a system to track success and mastery with certain skills related to their reading abilities. She decided she wanted to “create a reusable data tracker” as her challenge.
When I asked her what strategies she had used in the past to address this type of challenge? She wasn’t able to verbalize anything, but when I asked what have other teachers she has known done to successfully address this? She said that she knew her mentor used Aggressive Monitoring, but never looked into it. So we decided to do some research together right then to see if that's what she wanted to try.
With the research we found she liked that aggressive monitoring was quick and purposeful. We were able to find pen-and-paper versions, but she wanted a digital tracker that she could use quickly on her iPad as she walked around the room. We ended up collaborating together on a Google Sheet that she could pull up easily. We then utilized the in-cell dropdown lists to let her quickly choose + or -. Then we worked together to identify which extra features she wanted, including conditional formatting for students successful in both (or not successful in both) and turning the results into charts.
I designed PD that showed how to design Formative Assessments in Seesaw.
As part of this PD, I also showed how to read the data from the assessments, read the reports, and break down information to inform future activities.
