take pride in the process' final product
Since every committee member is part of the process. It's important that each member knows his/her role. This discussion of expectations helps keep everyone in their lanes. The image to the left provides a model of what roles can look like in an organization.
There are several phases that are involved with curriculum design. In the context of a school building, the following order of the phases is recommended.
School
Self-Analysis
Description: During this phase, the faculty considers what is going well and what needs improvement in the subject area.
Inputs: Faculty observations, parent feedback, student data results, educational trends
Duration: 3 months - 1 year
Mission & Development
Description: During this phase, the faculty determines the mission/vision and philosophy as well as creates the curriculum guide. A instructional resource review also fits in during this phase.
Inputs: state standards, evidence-based research, teacher training program
Duration: 6 months - 1 year
Implementation
Description: During this phase, the faculty implements the curriculum guide, which may include a new instructional resource or program.
Inputs: curriculum guide, possible new instructional resource/program
Duration: 1 -2 school years
Refinement & Maintenance
Description: During this phase, the faculty refines the instruction to achieve the goals of the curriculum guide. In addition, data is collected for any gaps that need to be addressed during the next curriculum review.
Inputs: teacher observation, parent feedback, curriculum guide, student data results
Duration: 1 -2 school years
