Dear K1 Parents and Students,
Welcome to K1! We wish you a warm welcome to K1 and a special welcome to those families new to UWCSEA East.
The early years of a child’s formal education are of great importance. It is in this period of time that children enter the social world beyond their family and establish themselves as members of a larger community. It is in these years that children will begin to form an idea of themselves as social beings, as thinkers, and as language users; learning how to express their ideas, feelings and opinions in a variety of ways.
Our K1 team are all very excited about the year ahead and look forward to welcoming you to our K1 and Infant communities.
We recognise that parents and other adults who care for a child are the child’s first educators and significantly influence their child’s learning. All children arrive at school with a variety of skills, attitudes and values; alongside a wonderful sense of curiosity to discover and inquire through play. It is with this in mind that K1 teachers here at UWCSEA East, work together with a common shared understanding about the importance of child-centred, play-based learning, in order to provide a welcoming, positive and meaningful school experience for our K1 students. We endeavour to create an environment that is happy, safe, secure and stimulating, in which young children can thrive.
Service is one of the five elements of our UWCSEA curriculum. In K1, we particularly emphasise the importance of valuing, helping and taking action for people within our home and school communities. Through our Local Service, we help support the Grade 1s in their interactions with the residents at Happy Lodge, a home for the elderly located in Tampines. In the Infant School, our Global Concern is Kuma Cambodia, a school in Cambodia.
We look forward to meeting you at the Meet the Teacher Evening on Monday, 17 August, 6–7pm, further details to follow.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at anytime during the school year, as we are always here to support you and your child. In the meantime, enjoy the school holiday and we can all look forward to a wonderful year of learning.
Warm regards,
Rachel Rhodes
