Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Grade 5 and what we know will be a time of great personal and academic growth for all as the students begin their last year in the Primary School at UWCSEA East. My name is Brendan Bolger and I am the Head of Grade 5.
We have a fantastic team in Grade 5 of staff with a wealth of international teaching experience and interests.
We will be working together with you to prepare your child for Middle School, while ensuring a depth of learning on which your child can build in the years to come. While we are separate classes, we do definitely promote a grade identity and aim to deliver a collaborative and shared programme with a cohesive spirit of togetherness as a Grade 5 community.
The first day of school for all students will be on Tuesday, 18 August.
We have an exciting year ahead. In the first week of the school year we will orientate your child to Grade 5 and get to know them. But what better way to get to know each other than to get straight into our learning? We will be starting our Reading and Writing Workshops and Mathematics in the second week, as well as our first unit of study, ‘Community’ followed by our 'Changes' unit. Towards the end of the year we have our Exhibition of Learning where we celebrate the culmination of our learning from throughout the primary years.
In Grade 5, our Global Concern is to support the NGO Epic Arts whose outstanding work improves the lives of deaf and disabled people living in Cambodia. Epic Arts promotes integration of people of all abilities and disabilities using the arts as a form of expression, transformation and empowerment; celebrating the creative potential of those with whom we work. Epic Arts believes in a world where Every Person Counts (EPiC) and where people living with disabilities are valued, accepted and respected. One of the ways we support our GC is through our grade fundraiser which two years ago was a hugely enjoyable Danceathon.
Throughout the year, the Grade 5 students support the Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen in Geylang. Every day volunteers prepare 4000+ meals for the underprivileged living here in Singapore. These are people who cannot afford to eat; our students help with preparation of these meals and learn that often the biggest help you can give is the gift of time and effort. It is truly magical and guaranteed to inspire.
In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your summer holiday, and if you have any inquiries about Grade 5, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Brendan Bolger

Lunch orders – all Grade 5 students will have the option to either bring lunch from home or purchase lunch from the canteen through our provider, Sodexo. Each student will be given a College ID card on the first day of school that is linked to the student's account. As a parent, you can put money in the account either online or using cash at the kiosk machines on campus. Also, there will be an option to pay with cash, but this option is not ideal for our Grade 5 students.
If your family chooses the option for Sodexo self choice meal selection, it might be nice to discuss the options that Sodexo will have on offer before your child attends on the first day of school. Look forward to seeing this menu in the weeks to come.
