Week 1, Day 1 Packet

Good morning! Welcome to our first official day of remote learning. I am excited to lead you on this journey!

Today's focus will be on the reading portion of the packet under "Day 1." I've created a short video (well, unfortunately not short enough! Ha!) to walk you through the packet this first time. That video is here:

PacketHelpWeek1Day1.mov

Your student's first written assignment is completing the "fill in the blank" practice page in today's packet. Physically, this is printed on the reverse side of second piece of paper in the packet. (It was taken from a workbook and at the bottom it says page "199.") Please have your child finish this page. Take a picture of it and submit it to me through ClassDojo Portfolio. I've created an assignment for it.

If you have additional time and your child is interested in expanding his or her learning today, your family can continue to work through the reading and writing sections of the week 1, day 1 portion of the packet. This would include working on the "Lines of Practice" (explained in the video above), working on sight words, and creating flashcards.

Beyond that, the lesson plans mention having your first grader write a true story (a narrative) of something funny that actually happened to them once! Their story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. ;) But this is not required for today!

If you're feeling super successful and motivated... you can tackle the math conversation at the end of the lesson plan. Which one of those shapes doesn't belong?

Best of luck! I am here to support you! Send me a message anytime!

Tuesday, April 7th Learning Tasks

Week 1, Day 2 Packet

Hello Everyone!

For today, my primary task for us is to access a system called Clever. Clever is both a website and a free app you can download to your phone or iPad. Clever is a system which organizes many educational apps. It saves you from having to sign-in multiple times.

Every student has a unique sign-in for Clever. I will message these logins to each family individually via Class Dojo.

Once in Clever, I would like you to download the following app: DreamBox

Our classroom code for DreamBox is: 74935. Your child will be instructed to choose a password for their account. The password will be a picture.

DreamBox is an amazing math resource. This program is sophisticated! It tailors instruction based on a student's answers. (For example, if a student is answering correctly every time, the questions gradually become more difficult until the perfect level of challenge is obtained.) For this reason, please do not provide adult help as your first grader works in DreamBox!

I would like for each student to spend 10-15 minutes working in DreamBox today. I can monitor their progress on my end.

For the packet today:

  • Please continue working on sight words. Please pick two new words to master today and make flashcards.
  • Read the story "Helping Horses" with your family.

You're done for today!

Extra credit? Write me a narrative story about a funny thing that happened to you once! Make sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. I'm looking for capital letters at the beginning of sentences, finger spaces in between words, and punctuation at the end of each sentence. Be creative and engage your reader! ;)

Week 1, Day 3 Packet

Good morning!

Yesterday's task of connecting with Clever proved to be a tough one. If that was a hurdle you didn't cross , I understand. Please reach out to me. Let's tackle it together today.

If you did win the Clever war yesterday, here is your task today: find "Lexia Core 5" within Clever. There is an image of the app below:

This is a powerful educational tool. Lexia Core 5 is a reading app. Like DreamBox, it tailors instruction based on the student's responses. I can monitor progress on my end. Lexia subscriptions are so expensive, we usually only have a few for the whole school. This is unprecedented that everyone has access. I am really excited to see the progress kids can make using it!

If you can find it, please have your first grader spend 15 minutes (or more) reading in Lexia Core 5.

For the packet today:

  • Please continue working on sight words. Please pick three new words to master today and make flashcards.
  • Please complete the worksheet page for today. (It says page "97" at the bottom.) Please submit a photo of this work to me via Class Dojo.

Optional:

  • Work on one page out of the math workbook I sent home on the last day of school ("Home Connections").

Go team!

Thursday, April 9th Learning Tasks

Week 1, Day 4 Packet

Welcome to Thursday!

First: please plan for a fun, short, video chat for the whole class tomorrow, Friday, 4/10 at 9:30am. I'll send out a link later today! I'm really looking forward to seeing the kids. I hope you can join us!

Work for today: I'm sensing that the many tech tasks so far this week have tired everyone out. No tech today! Unless, of course, your first grader would like to spend a little time on either DreamBox (math) or Lexia Core 5 (reading).

From the packet:

  • Let's focus on a math submission today, since the others have been reading/writing. Please turn to the very back of your packet where there is a lot of supplemental math. Find the page that says: "Counting by Fives and Tens" at the top. It has a section with cubes to count at the top and a number line at the bottom. Please complete this and submit it to me on Class Dojo. It looks like this:

Thanks for all you're doing! It's almost Friday!

Friday, April 10th Learning Tasks

Week 1, Day 5 Packet

Hooray for Friday!

Hooray for Morning Meeting!

Let's all get together this morning for a video call! It would be so fun for the kids to see each other!

I'm going to suggest that you start the process of logging in this first time around 9:10-9:15am. We have some families who have to be off and onto other calls by 10am, so I'll start promptly by 9:30am and plan to end by 9:50am this time.

To get to the meeting, please click this link: https://bendk12.webex.com/meet/amy.hughes

The first time you click that link, you'll be prompted to download Cisco WebEx onto your computer, iPad or phone. For that reason, you may want to experiment with the link prior to the meeting time.

I've created a screen cast of what you'll see when you click the link. I hope it helps!

See you all in the morning!
