This activity is appropriate for a self-contained classroom between the ages of 6-11, but students in general music classes orhomeschool may want to try this activity.
Need:
The expressed need is for students to be able to cross the midline and develop relationship skills in an environment that promotes the well-being of body, mind, and spirit.
How:
(10 minutes) Warm-Up with Scarves: (https://youtu.be/D3rNzu1nYz4) Students will use large motor skills utilizing the movement of the arms and legs. Upon completion of the activity, students are invited to lead the group with their own self-created scarf movements that align with the music.
(10 minutes) Air Drumming: (https://youtu.be/jQcvzbsCCrE ) Students will air drum to music on a steady beat, crossing the midline.
(10 minutes)Desk Drumming: (https://youtu.be/Bi8gkjTYcXE)Students will learn adesk drumming routine that incorporates beat and rhythm. Upon completion of this activity, a student leader will be chosen to lead students in another song where they are to create their own desk drumming, air drumming, or scarf routine.
What:
This is a 30-minute group music experience for a self-contained classroom with diverse ages, experiences, and abilities. The musical experience is based upon feedback from Activity 2. The activities are scaffolded using a steady beat with scarves to incorporate beat and rhythm for the culminating activity.
UDL and SEL:
Students are developing relationship skills during the activity when they support their peers and take on the leadership role in the final activity. The students have chosen songs for each activity in this series creating an environment that empowers them to take control of their learning.
