This activity is appropriate for a self-contained classroom between the ages of 6-11, but students in general music classes or homeschool may want to try this activity.
Students will be provided drumsticks or rhythm sticks to use during this activity. (Pool noodles or other items may be used in place of sticks) Students will learn how to hold drumsticks and play 3 basic warm up movements with a steady beat. This activity is designed with student selected music to enhance student engagement and improved gross motor skills.
Students will be given two sticks to use during the movement activity. The song for this activity was chosen by the students
of the self-contained classroom. Students will move their bodies and sticks along with the person in the video.
(10 minutes) Student Leaders: Student(s) are chosen to lead the classroom in a steady beat movement with sticks to a song of their choice. Students will create their own movements using previous knowledge of air drumming in videos # 1 and #2. Or, students have the option to create movements that are different from videos #1 and #2.
What:
This is a 30-minute group music experience for a self-contained classroom with diverse ages, experiences, and abilities. The musical experience is based upon gross motor movements of the arms using sticks that go with the steady beat of the music. The music is chosen by the students and the movements are created by the service-learning professor (me). After the students have had sufficient practice time with the teacher-created movements, they will be invited to lead the class in new movements created by their peers.
