This activity is appropriate for a self-contained classroom between the ages of 6-11, but students in general music classes or homeschool may want to try this activity.
Need:
The identified needs of this classroom are the social and emotional growth of students in the areas of collaboration and relationship building along with skills for crossing the midline. The chosen movement activity supports each of these needs in this musical experience.
What:
This is a 25-30 minute group music experience for a self-contained classroom with diverse ages, experiences, and abilities. The musical experience is based upon gross motor movements of the arms using scarves that go with the steady beat of the music. The music is chosen by the students and the movements are created by the service learning professor (me). After the students have had sufficient practice time with the movements, they will be invited to lead the class in new movements created by their peers.
UDL and SEL:
The musical movement activity is designed to promote social and emotional skills focused on collaboration and leadership that will foster positive relationships in the classroom. The UDL strategy is designed to optimize individual choice and autonomy by having students choose the music for the movement lesson. The activity will also help to improve the gross motor skills of students while moving to the steady beat of the music and crossing the midline.
