This activity is a beginning music lesson that will cover the following information:
Recognizing notes and note values
How to identify time signature, tempo, and key signature of a piece of music
Learning the basic notes on the piano
Learning the notes of the treble clef
Basic music terminology such as key, tempo, melody, rhythm, dynamic etc.
To begin the activity, I will start by playing through the melody of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” on the piano while singing
I will introduce what we are going to do by saying something like “today, let’s talk a bit about what goes into being able to read a piece of sheet music and play a song.”
First, I will introduce the following note values by showing a picture of the note and providing its definition. For this explanation and all of the subsequent explanations I will also hold up printed visual aides.

Then, I will explain the following time signatures
¾ time
4/4 time
After that, I will give definitions of the following tempos
Largo
Andante
Moderato
Allegro
Vivace
Presto
Prestissimo
Then, I will talk about key signatures and what they mean
I will then show the sheet music for “Take Me Out to the Ball game” and indicate where on the sheet music you can find the time signature, key signature, and tempo and what they are
I will explain the order of the lines and spaces of the treble clef
Then, I will connect the notes on the staff to the piano by labeling the notes on the piano that we will need for “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” with sticky notes
After that, I will play through the first phrase of the song slow enough for someone to play along, followed by the next phrases slowly as well
Then, I will play the whole excerpt slightly faster
I will conclude the lesson by playing the excerpt up to tempo and singing along
