How to: Creating a playlist for self-awareness for tweens and adolescents, but younger kids and adults may also like to try this activity. Follow these three steps:
Think about three songs.
Think about three songs you enjoy listening to at home or while doing an activity. For example, 1 music selection or song you really enjoy listening to/a “for fun” song, 1 selection representing a part of your identity of your choice, and 1 selection representing any feeling of your choice.
Create the playlist on your electronic device. This may be your phone, your ipad, or computer. Make a compilation of songs you identify with based on experiences or pure enjoyment of the song.
**The music we can listen to at school–please review the lyrics and content.
Create a power point or google slide with these songs linked in the slides. You will use the emoji visual bank to help you label emotions prompted by or associated with your selections. I have created an example as a guide for their project. The songs are embedded into the google slide for you to view; click on the hyperlink.
SELF AWARENESS
The abilities to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts (CASEL, 2006). Students will learn how to identify and process their emotions. Creating the playlist will also link feelings, values, and thoughts these students may have experienced or may be experiencing.
Who: Middle to High School Students.
Many middle adolescents have more arguments with their parents as they struggle for more independence. They may spend less time with family and more time with friends. They are very concerned about their appearance, and peer pressure may peak at this age. Listening to music may help with self identity and awareness.
