Who: All the memory care residents at Trezevant Episcopal Home, while specifically designed for those unable to ambulate easily to other areas and who suffer from severe sundowning symptoms. It will provide a good option for this audience for socialization and go along with the community's desire for using the tv less.
This component has opportunities for Universal Design for Learning and Social-Emotional Learning application:
UDL: Clapping, singing, dancing, just moving and grooving, however desired
SEL: Self-awareness-- triggering memories of songs, opportunities for "play"
How: As specified in the project proposal, this component was to arrange more live entertainment for residents on the floor on a weekly basis. Here are the steps needed to ensure this goes smoothly:
-Refer to posted schedule for when to expect entertainment.
-Make sure room is arranged for optimal viewing benefit.
-Make sure refreshments prepared prior to event starting (ice retrieved from downstairs and snacks/sodas ready).
-Ensure all relevant residents are out on floor and ready (e.g., gone to bathroom and freshened up).
-Look for moments to get residents engaged in event through dancing, clapping hands, and singing (dementia residents will often "mirror" what we do).
-Take pictures.
-Staff needed to help in cleanup and room rearranging
What: Materials Needed to do Activity:
-Power cord on hand if entertainer needs
-Hand instruments for residents to engage with music if desired (staff will need to decide if appropriate for group or if majority will enjoy without extra sound)
-Refreshments (ice pitcher, cups for food and drink, sodas, snack option, and napkins, gloves)
