Who: Memory care residents in the community with various levels of dementia (mid to late stage based on Global Deterioration Scale)
Need: We have residents who have a hard time engaging in our group activities, needing one-on-on opportunities for engagement. We especially have a need for targeting such residents during the late afternoon “sundowning” period in the community. These portable and relatively independently operatable devices will be an easy-to-use tool for staff to pull out
What: To address the above needs, I have started a system for using devices with music loaded on them. The devices include music from the 1930s to 1980s. They include songs from Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, The Beatles, and James Taylor. To avoid any chance of overuse or isolation from others, I have developed a sign-out procedure with an approved time limit for each resident based on their individual needs. I have seen the devices already making a difference in the residents’ quality of life-- in our community, we strive to provide personalized care that goes beyond basic dementia care to create moments for quality of life like this.
Element of UDL:
Multiple Means of Representation:
I have a Bluetooth speaker as an alternative to the headphones for the resident to listen to device songs with if the headphones are uncomfortable or scary.
Multiple Means of Engagement:
I have a split cable that allows me/other staff member to listen with the resident to the songs for dancing or singing along (mirroring options are so important in dementia care).
Element of SEL:
Self Awareness:
Residents have a personal opportunity to engage with songs that are still buried in the mind but that they haven’t heard in a while. Their response, positive or negative, is proof of self-awareness.
How:
1.)At the nurses station, a designated cabinet (second from left wall) contains a charging dock with the devices on them. There are multiple devices for someone to pick from based on knowledge of resident's preferences (can always just ask them normally).
2.)After signing-out the device for the particular resident (putting check-out time) and paying attention to time limit, the staff member can take the device and headphones and give to a resident.
3.)Whether or not to stay with a resident during use can be left to the staff’s discretion.
4.)Sign-in the device after use. Make sure to fill all parts of sheet.
5.) Disinfect with Clorox white the headphones and device.
6.) Return back to charger, so it is ready for next person.
