Who: Council on Aging Case Manager
Date: Class occurred on Thursday, April 7th. Feedback received on Friday, April 8th.
Goal: Promoting social and emotional engagement in older adults
For my second activity I planned and led a 30 minute exercise class on Zoom. This class was put on by the Council on Aging in Central Illinois. Once a month this organization provides the older adults they serve with a fun class to take on various subjects with different guest presenters. This Zoom series was created as a way for the older adults to keep connected with one another during the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic.
My experience with the service learning project continues to be amazing. My original plan for this activity was to create videos of myself doing the exercises and then upload them to the YouTube channel that I created for Activity 1. However, my site contact reached out to me to tell me that they had a scheduling issue with their original April Zoom class guest presenter and asked if I would like to do my second activity live on Zoom. I was so excited for this opportunity and grateful that I was thought of to fill the spot. I had an absolute blast leading a live class, and learned so much from the participants who were in attendance.
When I was originally planning the second activity for the service learning project, I was very nervous about how the workout videos were going to be perceived. From what my site contact told me, I knew that exercise classes were something that the older adults enjoyed doing, but I did not know how it was going to translate via the internet.
When designing the second activity, I took into consideration the feedback that I received from my first activity. I made sure to include the genres and styles of songs that the participants said that they preferred the best. I wanted to promote autonomy and preferred choices in every way that I could across all my activities.
My site contact sat in on the class so that they could provide appropriate feedback, and they said that based on what she observed, the exercise class was a success. In the feedback I got she said that she really noticed that the adults were participating more than they had in previous Zoom classes, and that she loved getting to see them respond so positively to the music chosen.
In the research that I did for this activity specifically, I wanted to ensure that I was creating exercises that would be effective for older adults, but more importantly, be safe for them to complete. In addition to that I also knew that I needed to plan alternate and modified exercises for each movement that I would be doing in the class. I wanted to promote a positive physical activity experience for the older adults and to do everything in my power to make the class accessible and to not cause harm.
In Activity 2 I was also able to work on my group leading abilities. Group management is something that I am not as comfortable with, so I was grateful that I was able to work on that skill in this activity.
My final activity for the service learning project will be to create a musical game that can be played as a group. The initial thoughts that I have for this activity is a Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune type game that can be done in teams or individuals depending on how many older adults are in attendance for this last activity. I will be considering the musical preferences that I have been given from the participants as well as having multiple means of representation incorporated throughout the game.
