This resource and class was created for older adults
This activity was done in a Zoom class put on by the Council on Aging in Central Illinois. Once a month this organization provides the older adults they serve with a fun class to take on various subjects with different guest presenters. This Zoom series was created as a way for the older adults to keep connected with one another during the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic.
Begin the session with a brief introduction of myself, an overview of the class topic. (Approx. 5 minutes)
Allow the participants in the group to briefly introduce themselves and answer the icebreaker question.
Icebreaker question used: What is your favorite song or musical artist
Exercise 1: Warm Up- Song Used “I Dream Of Jeanie Theme Song” (5 minutes)
Let the participants know that this exercise can be completed standing up or sitting down and to choose what feels best for them
Lead the group through the warm up
Warm up consists of slow, simple stretches to get everyone’s bodies loose and warmed up.
Exercise 2: Lower Body Workout- Song Used “The Twist” (5 minutes)
Demonstrate all the exercises and adaptations first and allow participants to practice and determine what way to move feels best and safest
Complete the exercises in sequence to the song
Exercise 2: Upper Body Workout- Song Used “Rock Around the Clock” (5 minutes)
Demonstrate all the exercises and adaptations first and allow participants to practice and determine what way to move feels best and safest
Complete the exercises in sequence to the song
Exercise 3: Arm Workout (Drumming)- Song Used “Johnny B.Goode” (5 minutes)
Ask participants to locate 2 items that could be used as drumsticks (pens/pencils, chopsticks, etc.)
Discuss proper technique to hold the sticks
Demonstrate all the exercises and adaptations first and allow participants to practice and determine what way to move feels best and safest
Complete the exercises in sequence to the song
Wrap up and Cool Down
Lead the group through a brief, cool down breathing exercise
Thank everyone for attending the class and allow time for questions, comments, feedback, etc.

One chair (or another flat surface) to drum on
2 household items that will function as drumsticks: Examples include; pens/pencils, chopsticks, rulers, wooden spoons, etc.
