Who - I received feedback from the teacher in New York on Saturday.
When - They will try the activity with their kids on Wednesday
The Need - The teachers interviewed expressed different needs such as primary content for upper elementary, processing emotions, and working together in groups.
Blog:
For the first activity I was attempting to bring in some student interest through the topics and media. This activity was specifically working towards creating opportunities for older students to participate in topics that are usually taught in younger grades. This topic was tempo. The other goal was to allow students the opportunity to learn about roles in a group through the framework of The Avengers. It was great to receive feedback from my peers about this lesson.
Through this experience, I have enjoyed finding out the needs of the community and work towards providing supports for them. I hope to be working towards accomplishing that through these lessons. I am realizing that as a teacher, I have an idea usually and let it germinate into being with students in front of me and we work through the process together. With this activity, I needed to be more prescriptive and that was challenging. I will find out soon how effective these activities are / will be.
My assumptions so far included the need for more examples of how to use popular media in the classroom. This is something that I love to do because I am a frequent consumer of the popular media. While not everyone is readily comfortable with this, I am also loving to hear the great things happening in classrooms already with popular media. So far I have not learned more about individuals with disabilities in this setting, and/or about diversity, equity, and inclusion with this activity. I hope to hear more with the more specific feedback I will receive.
In reflection, I did make sure to utilize the principles of UDL in the presentation of my materials. The teamwork thing is something in the SEL framework but I need to be more specific and intentional about how I am implementing that in future activities. The coursework and reading have made sure to heighten my senses as I am developing these lessons for the teachers. Skills I have gained are to be more clear and prescriptive with the instructions and slides so that teachers can almost plug and play the presentation.
In activity 2, I am going to take the feedback from the teacher and work to implement some extensions with rhythms to help solidify the concept of tempo with the classes. I am also going to look at some examples of social emotional learning lessons that will help me to craft that into the music lessons.
Feedback from Teacher:
✨ glows ✨
- student interest (superheroes, tik tok, summer, etc): it’s so clear that kids would have fun with this lesson and it’s something relatable that they enjoy!
- movement: lots of opportunities to be moving around and interacting with each other.
🌲 grows 🌲
- I love that you added a section to discuss tempos! I would love to see you elaborate more here and include something for scholars to echo/move/show to really stamp the musical element
- extension: add body percussion sound with hero poses
I’m so excited to use these slides! I’ll try to take some videos too
