Who – This activity is for youth in 6-12th grades in a church youth group
Intervention – lyric discussion
Task analysis:
1. The activity will be a lyric discussion of the song “beautiful things” by the band Gungor. The activity will be done prior to their socially distant small group meetings.
2. The student will provide lyric sheets for the youth minister to send to each student in the small group. The youth minister will send these with the students along with these instructions from the student:
- Listen to the song “beautiful things” by Gungor
- While listening, follow along with the lyrics using your lyric sheet. (Print it off so you can have it in front of you or use an iPad or other device that allows you to electronically write on the sheet).
- Listen for lyrics and phrases that stand out to you, that you find meaningful, that you find strange or unique, and that resonate with you.
- Make markings on the page when these things stand out – underline, circle, draw, etc.
- Think about why those lyrics mean something to you, make you feel a certain way, remind you of something or someone, and so on, and write that down on the page to remember it.
- Listen to the song as many times as you want or need in order to understand its meaning, to find your favorite things about it, and make any notes about it.
- When you come back together with your small group, you will share the lyrics you found interesting and your reasonings behind them!
3. When the small groups meet, the youth minister will have a list of questions provided by the student to ask in order to facilitate this activity. The youth minister may ask all of these or some of these, but these are what he can reference:
- What did you underline/circle/highlight?
- Why?
- What did these lyrics make you think of?
- How does this song relate to your current circumstance/life today?
- How does this song relate to the world?
- Does this song make you think of your friends and family?
- What beautiful things can you make happen each day for others and for yourself?
Materials:
- phone, computer, or other listening device to listen to the song
- headphones or speaker if preferred
- lyric sheet or lyrics on an electronic device
- pen or pencil, highlighters, markers, etc.
