Who: 6-12 grade students in a church youth group community to do at home.
What: A collaborative playlist utilizing Spotify.
SEL: Self – awareness and relationship building.
Why: According to the youth minister at this church, the students are in need of community cultivation and socialization. This collaborate playlist allows for students to come together in a way that is not over zoom, provides a playlist of music curated by their friends, and gets the students involved in an artistic, expressive, shared space that is virtual in a new, unique way.
Task analysis:
- Goals: community cultivation and socialization through self-expression and relationship building SEL competencies
- Objectives: for students to virtually interact with one another, express themselves and get to know one another through the creative outlet of music selection and music listening
- Procedures:
1. Utilize the church Spotify premium account and create 7 new collaborative playlists for each grade level entitled “6th grade shared playlist,” “7th grade shared playlist,” and so on through 12th grade
2. Therapist will begin by placing 3-5 songs on the playlists through the church account to get the ball rolling and give examples
3. Youth minister will instruct the students to download the free Spotify app on their phones or other devices, if they do not have the app already, and create an account. If students do not have smartphones, tablets, or computers to download the app, students can share their song selections with the youth minister, and he will add the songs to the corresponding playlist.
4. Youth minister will create a GroupMe message for each grade level and share the link to the collaborative playlist to this message, so each student has access. Youth minister will be included in the group messages to help facilitate conversation.
5. Youth minister will instruct each student to place 2-3 of their favorite songs, any songs they choose, onto the collaborative playlist.
6. When students have added their songs, they will send a note to their GroupMe message explaining why they chose each song. Explanations can be as simple or elaborate as they choose. They can then chat with each other in the designated message about their songs and connections to them.
7. Students will then have access to the playlist and GroupMe chat and be able to listen to each other’s favorite music and connect with one another through their selections.
Materials: iPhone or other smartphone/tablet/computer, free Spotify app, free GroupMe app, headphones or Bluetooth speaker if desired for listening
