Service-Learning Activity 1
Created by: Chelsea Gibbs
Who: This intervention is for the use of music therapy practicum students at the non-profit, Build Inclusion, who are working with young adults with disabilities with the goal to obtain competitive, integrated, and meaningful employment.
What: This is a lyric discussion that is particularly targeted to focus on self-awareness and the transference of a jobseeker’s strengths to the workplace. Elements of Universal Design for Learning are utilized to ensure each jobseeker gets the most out of the intervention. Cognitive, social/emotional, and communication goals are addressed.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Instruction for the intervention will be given using multiple means of representation and allow for multiple means of engagement and expression. Directions will be given verbally, a printout of the lyrics will be offered to each jobseeker, and visuals will be used to help explain topics in the lyric discussion. Jobseekers can engage with the activity through discussion, writing, or drawing. The intervention focuses on self-awareness and relationship skills which are two of the five SEL competencies.
The Need: After interviewing a previous music therapy practicum student at Build Inclusion, they stated they wished they had a better understanding of cognitive and intellectual disabilities so they could have better prepared interventions to be not only age-appropriate, but also cognitively appropriate. The music therapy student specifically requested materials regarding lyric analysis for individuals with intellectual disabilities, as they felt their lyric analysis interventions were sometimes too abstract. This intervention offers space for jobseekers to engage and interact in a variety of means.
Materials:
· Prepared to play and sing “Roar” by Katy Perry
· Print out of lyrics for each job seeker
· Blank pieces of paper and writing/coloring materials for each jobseeker
· Projected images provided in this document
How:
· Explain to jobseekers that you are going to play a song for them. (It is a song most people of this age group are probably familiar with, but it may be the first time they are hearing it).
· Give jobseekers the option of relaxing and listening, listening while having the lyrics in front of them, or listening and drawing. They can choose any variation of the options. For example, they may want to look at the words while drawing on the lyrics page.
· Once materials are passed out, play through the song.
· Allow jobseekers a few minutes to wrap up their final thoughts.
· Project the first image on the board and have somebody read the first line of the song, “I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath. Scared to rock the boat and make a mess.”
· Lead a discussion where people can share about a time they have felt scared. Their answers may range from concrete answers to abstract thoughts. Encourage and demonstrate discussion as well as responses to others who are sharing. Allow jobseekers time to think before responding. Be sure to acknowledge people for sharing and responding. A simple, “Thank you for sharing”, or a validation such as, “That does sound scary,” is often an appropriate response. Examples of questions include:
o Have you ever felt scared of something?
o What were you scared of?
o How did your body feel when you were scared? (Palms sweating, heart beating fast, etc.).
o What do you notice about the image projected on the board?
o What does it mean to “bite your tongue” or “hold your breath?”
· Next, project the image of the lion and have somebody read the line, “’Cause I am the champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar.”
· Ask jobseekers what words they associate with a lion. When was a time they felt like a lion (strong, fierce, etc.)? What do they notice about the image of the lion?
· Jobseekers may share experiences, thoughts, drawings, notes.
· For a closing of the discussion, ask how their strengths could be used when they are at work.

· Lyrics
I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything
You held me down, but I got up (hey)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (hey)
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You're gonna hear me roar
Now I'm floatin' like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero
You held me down, but I got up (hey)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (hey)
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You're gonna hear me roar
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (you'll hear me roar)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You're gonna hear me roar
Roar, roar, roar, roar, roar
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (yeah)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You're gonna hear me roar
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (you'll hear me roar)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You're gonna hear me roar
