This activity was specifically created for assisted living and memory care residents, but other older adults and their families may also enjoy this activity. For the activity, I considered the residents' needs for physical and cognitive engagement and aimed to provide some opportunities for reminiscence. I also considered the need for flexibility with activities at Creekside.
I created five music and movement videos for a YouTube playlist that will be used with the residents at Creekside. Each short video has a different physical activity objective (breathing and stretching, upper body gross motor, fine motor, lower body gross motor, and playing an instrument with music); the staff at Creekside can decide if some or all of the videos will be used depending on the needs of the residents that day.
UDL ideas were implemented in these videos primarily through multiple means of representation. I tried to be sure verbal information was always also presented through visual or gestural means (e.g., saying the name of a musician and showing a picture; describing movements while modeling them). I also utilized SEL principles such as self-awareness (by having residents consider their own experiences) and social awareness (through discussion and reminiscence).
Someone administering the playlist I have created would need to do the following:
Begin playing the playlist from the beginning. Ensure closed captions are turned on if possible.
Model movements/breathing that I describe in the videos.
Encourage participants and acknowledge when they are doing the movements correctly.
Pause near the end of the first, third, and fourth videos after I present a question for discussion.
When video is paused, encourage participants to share. Facilitator can connect participants' stories to one another.
Begin next video when each discussion concludes.
For fifth and final video, hand out egg shakers/small instruments to interested participants. I built in opportunities for participants to pass instruments to the next participant (I encourage them to clap their hands if they do not have an instrument).
Materials needed: A/V technology to present videos, a few egg shakers/small instruments, chairs for participants
