Activity #1 : Breathing to Music Resources
Who: Veteran patients could use this to increase relaxation, improve mood, decrease stress, and/or decrease anxiety.
Need: According to my community partner, there is a need among their veteran patients for ways to help with insomnia and excessive stress. I plan to provide a resource handout explaining how breathing can help with stress reduction and relaxation, and how to match breathing to music. The goal is for the veteran patients to utilize this resource to help with tasks such as falling asleep or decompressing after a strenuous physical therapy session.
What: This activity consists of one handout. The handout will have a succinct explanation of how controlled breathing is beneficial, as well as instructions on how to match their breathing to music. The veteran patients can read through the handout and follow the prompts.
UDL: Representation > Perception > Offer ways of customizing the display of information > Display information in a flexible format; I will be digitally creating the handout and emailing it to my community partner. The handout is created in a visually accessible manner, with font, color, text size, and contrast in mind. From there, the handout can also be edited as needed.
SEL: Self-management > Stress management; This resource is primary directed towards providing a tool for the veteran patients to manage their stress in positive ways.
How: Once the handout has been retrieved from the community partner, the veteran patient will read through it before participating in the exercises. The next step is to find a device in which to play music. This could include a cell phone, a computer, or tablet with either speakers or headphone options. Then, the veteran patient can click play and follow along with the instructions provided in the handout. The veteran patient will pick a song of their choosing that helps them feel calm. Once they have chosen a song, they will play it and listen for the beat. The beat is the rhythm that people will clap along to, tap their foot, or nod their head. This can be found by listening to the the instruments, such as the drums. Once the beat is found, the veteran patient will begin breathing in while counting to 4, and then breathing out, counting to 4. The number of beats they breathe to can vary.
