This activity is designed for parents to complete with young children
The activity creates a framework for discussion between parent and child basic rules in the household, and why they are important. The discussion will include what the rule is, why it exists, and how others feel when the rule is broken. The activity is accompanied with a fill in the blank song that talks about practicing the rules.
Parents along with their children will be able to come up with rules, how they are helpful, and why those rules exist. They will be able to sing the song independently and play a movement game that helps them practice the rules through acting it out. The parents will also be able to create a rule chart to hang up as a visual reminder.
This activity enables parents and children to learn and practice rules in a positive way, rather than children learning a rule they did not know until a situation arose where the rule was broken. It also helps children to understand why a rule exists and how it is helpful, rather than feeling the rules are ways to prevent them doing things they wish (or wish not) to do.
Use the family rules discussion pages here to establish at least three family rules, and create a family rules booklet! Work together to develop rules that are important for your family to help keep everyone safe, happy, and healthy! Here are some helpful guidelines to remember while developing rules:
Rules can fall under three categories: Safe, Happy, or Healthy. Choose the category depending on the service they provide to your family. It is okay if they do more than one!
Rules will be clearly established - use as little words as possible to help them be easy to remember
Each rule should be explained, so everyone understands how the rule keeps us safe, happy, or healthy
It's important to understand why people are upset if rules are not followed, so remember to discuss how others might feel when the rule is not followed
Use the discussion booklet you created to make a Family Rules Chart, which can be posted somewhere in the house as a visual reminder to help everyone remember the rules, and how they keep everyone safe, happy, and healthy! Use coloring utensils, glitter, stickers, and images from the images printout (see below) to make your chart fun and colorful!
Click here to print off a pre-made chart, or feel free to create your own at home!
Use the discussion booklet to help you complete your Family Rules Song! You can find a copy of the song here.
The template has enough verses for three rules, but you can always add more! Remember to add more rules slowly, to help everyone learn the rules completely and not become too overwhelmed.
The template has three large boxes, where you can draw a picture to help you remember the rule just by looking at it! There are also three small boxes, where you can post a cut out or draw a symbol as a visual reminder if the rule help keep us Safe, Happy, or Healthy.
Click here to listen to a recording of the Family Rules Song! There are spaces in the song for you to speak (or sing!) your own words!
Time to get singing and moving! Add some movements to your song to help act out and remember the new rules! You can use this chart from mothergoosetime.com for some ideas, and have fun creating some of your own moves as well!
You can also check out the video below to see how to sign "Safe", "Happy", and "Healthy" in American Sign Language!
You can find an images printout with symbols for Safe, Happy, and Healthy here. Also included in this printout are several feeling faces, which can be used to decorate your song, discussion booklet, or rules chart!
