Amy Mayes is the Fine Arts Coordinator and Director of Bands at L.V. Berkner High School. Her responsibilities include conducting Symphonic Band I, coordinating the marching band, co-conducting the Symphony Orchestra, conducting the pit orchestra, and serving as an administrator and advocate for all of the fine arts programs inside the Berkner Learning Community.
This is Ms. Mayes' 12th year of teaching and 6th year on staff at Berkner High School. Over the past 5 years, she served as an Associate Director for the Berkner Band, and during her tenure with Symphonic Band II the ensemble received first division ratings on both stage and in sightreading each year. Ms. Mayes also co-conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra and helped them to achieve both excellent and superior ratings. Ms. Mayes has served as the coordinator for the visual program for the marching band during the past 3 seasons, including 2023 when the Mighty Ram Band advanced to the UIL State Marching Band Competition.
Before joining the Berkner Band program, Ms. Mayes served as an Assistant Band Director for Union Public Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During her four years with the Union Bands program, she worked with students at all levelsl. She served as the 7th Grade Coordinator, conductor of the Union Concert Winds, and associate conductor for the Union Wind Ensemble for two years. Ms. Mayes spent all 4 years as the Woodwind Coordinator for the Renegade Regiment, Union’s nationally competitive HS marching band, who were selected as a BOA Grand Nationals Finalist in 2017 and 2019. Prior to teaching at Union, Ms. Mayes worked in Mesquite ISD for two years, teaching middle school and high school students within the North Mesquite and West Mesquite clusters.
Ms. Mayes holds Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Clarinet Performance, as well as a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Arkansas. While at the U of A, she performed in many of the university’s ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, Razorback Marching Band, and numerous chamber groups. Throughout her time in Northwest Arkansas, Ms. Mayes was also very active in the public school classrooms, serving as an adjunct teacher and private lesson teacher for several of the school districts in the area.
Ms. Mayes believes it is the ultimate privilege to be able to use music as a medium to empower students to grow into the best versions of themselves, and she is excited to be able to work alongside such an amazing group of colleagues and students.
