L.V. Berkner High School was founded in 1969 and has long carried a tradition of excellence through the Mighty Ram Band. Having been as big as 350 students in past years, the Berkner Band has been a place where thousands of students over the years have found a special home within the walls of the band hall.
The band directors of Berkner Past are sprinkled throughout the notable history of music education in not only the North Texas area, but also the entire state of Texas. The former Directors of Band include Robert Floyd, Mike Brashear, Frank Troyka, and Jason Schayot. Amy Mayes will serve as the first female Director of Bands for the program beginning in 2025.
The Berkner Band has been a two time recipient of the John Philips Sousa Foundation's Sudler Flag Honor, a two time invited performing ensemble to the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, has been a multi-time competitor and finalist at the UIL State Marching Band Championships, and has also twice been named the TMEA Honor Band of the year. Among all of those accomplishments, there have been many distinguished individual students who have been selected as members of the TMEA All-State Band, and there are many students who have gone on to pursue a career and further education in music upon graduating from Berkner High School.
Among all of the accomplishments within the program, the Berkner Band prides itself on being host to countless students that are involved in many activites throughout the school. The band program consistently is home to varsity athletes, academic top 10 students, student council leadership, NHS scholars, members of both the Bandoleras and Ramblers, Encore (varsity choir), students who perform leading roles in the school musical, JROTC, and countless others. The Mighty Ram Band is the largest student organization on campus and we are proud to have such talented, dedicated students be so heavily involved in the community throughout the high school.
