Vista Heights Middle School Choir & Modern Band Programs

Dear future Wildcats,

My name is Mrs. Mehrabkhani and I am the director of choir and Modern Band at Vista Heights Middle School. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Vista Heights Choir and Modern Band programs! We offer a variety of performing ensembles that you can be a part of!

• Beginner Choir (No experience needed - Semester-long)

• Intermediate Choir (Year-long)

• Advanced Choir (Year-long)

• Beginner Modern Band (No experience needed - Semester-long)

• Advanced Modern Band (Year-long)

What to expect in these classes:

Beginning Choir: This class is open to all who love singing. No prior experience needed. You will learn to match pitch and understand rhythm in fun musical games, sing a variety of rounds and partner songs from different cultures, and perform in formal and informal settings.

Intermediate Choir: This class is for students who have been in choir before or have auditioned. You will learn to sing different styles of music in two-part repertoire. You will also be introduced to sight singing with fun vocal games. You will perform for peers and parents as well as in festivals and competitions.

Advanced Choir: To join this class you will need at least two years of experience being in choir or auditioning. You will learn to sing different styles of music in different languages. You will be able to sing mostly three-part songs, add movement and dance to your performance, learn sight singing at an intermediate level, perform in and out of the school and compete in district and state-wide festivals. You will have the opportunity to enjoy fun field trip performances and workshops around Southern California.

Beginner Modern Band: In this class you will learn the basics of rock band instruments including keyboard, ukulele, guitars (classical and electric) and drums. If you’re someone who likes to play but doesn’t like to read music, this class is for you. We use a variety of visuals, diagrams, and charts to represent the notes that we play. Expect to have a lot of fun learning and performing.

Advanced Modern Band: Being in one semester-long Modern Band class qualifies you to enroll in Advanced Modern Band. In this class, you will learn about soloing and improvisation, inversions, and barre chords. You might even get to experience song writing and composition. Expect to have a lot of fun learning and performing.
