This DOST-PCAARRD-funded project spearheaded by Prof. Mercy Maceren-Pates of Department of Marine Science in collaboration with some faculty of the University of Science and Techonology of the Philippines at Panaon, Misamis Occidental focuses on developing a sustainable and eco-friendly Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) integrated with a polychaete-assisted biofilter for the broodstock conditioning of the mangrove crab Scylla serrata. The system aims to improve water quality and enhance the spawning and hatching performance of mangrove crabs cultured under stable and controlled environmental conditions. Through the use of RAS, the project supports responsible aquaculture practices aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (No Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). This innovation contributes to sustainable seafood production and the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
