On September 20, 2024, The Physics Department, WE CARE Office-OVCPA, and the Center for Innovation and Technopreneurship (iDEYA of MSU-IIT, in collaboration with MSU-Gensan, MSU-Buug, MSU-Naawan, and MSU-Marawi, and successfully hosted a workshop entitled “From Research to Community Impact: Journey to Commercialization Startup, and Community Applications. “The event took place on the 2nd floor of the PRISM Building at MSU-IIT.
It is a 1-day intensive workshop on Research to Community Impact. The participants were introduced to the basics of scientists working with communities in identifying the needs of the society that need technological innovations and formulation ideas and innovation to meet these needs. The workshop consisted of brief presentations and group activities related to the commercialization of a product.
The following are the sessions discussed during the workshop:
Session 1: Universities as drivers of social, economic, and technological innovation Listening to the community: Science and community projects – citizen science and community participation.
Session 2: The community we live in and want to change – selecting the top 10 challenges of our communities and down-selecting to top three priorities.
Session 3: Design thinking, Market Survey and evaluating customer feedback for your idea
Session 4: Business Models and Community Empowerment
Session 5: Measuring Community Impact
Session 6: Generating solutions
The speaker and host of the event, Prof. Surya Raghu, is the founder-president of Advanced Fluidics, LLC and founding partner of et Cube International, Inc, Maryland, USA. Dr. Surya Raghu is a recognized expert in research commercialization - transitioning ideas and innovations into commercial products, startup development and community engagement. His recent efforts in training programs are specifically addressing the UN SDGs.
The workshop brought together faculty extensionists, researchers, and staff from both the University and partner institutions, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing.
In order to support the development of MSMEs in Iligan City, the Negosyo Center at MSU-IIT organized a number of forums, webinars, and discussions as part of the university's Innovation thru eLeveraging Industry, Government, Academe Networks, and Inclusive Community Engagement (ILIGANiCE) program.
The simple bookkeeping seminar by Negostorya 2024 provided MSMEs and student entrepreneurs with practical skills to properly record and manage their business finances, making bookkeeping accessible even to those without prior accounting knowledge. Participants learned the importance of separating personal and business finances, preparing basic financial statements, and implementing internal controls to prevent losses. The training increased their confidence and motivation, enabling them to make informed decisions, track business growth, and improve financial discipline. Many attendees expressed that the hands-on approach and clear guidance made simple bookkeeping easy to apply in their daily operations.
The ProfLEC-KWL@Iligan: Professionalizing Key Women Leaders extension project expands on data-driven evaluations, particularly the Training Needs Assessment (TNA) carried out by MSU-IIT CEBA and the CMO-GAD entrepreneurship program implementation experience. Three targeted training sessions on enterprise development, financial literacy, and leadership were held by MSU-IIT CEBA in 2024 for a select group of women leaders.
