Equality Among Equals : Bridging Gaps, Building Unity
On October 23rd, 2024, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by collaborating with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Tipanoy in Iligan City to celebrate National Correctional Consciousness Week. Through the WE CARE Office alongside the College of Health and Sciences and Department of Psychology, the university brought vital services and support to individuals behind bars.
Recognizing the critical need for optical health, MSU-IIT partnered with the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists, the event featured an Optical and Medical Mission, to conduct optical services. Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) received vital eye examinations, which later on provided them with reading glasses and corrective lenses. The College of Health Sciences with their Nursing students lend a hand for health check up to the PDLs.
Beyond physical health, the Department of Psychology conducted psychological Intervention activity. This activity offers a safe space for PDLs to explore personal growth and navigate challenges in the current circumstances. The activity cultivated a positive ambiance to the PDLs, allowing them to reflect and foster a sense of hope.
Through the WE CARE Office initiatives, it continues to foster compassion and hope, building bridges toward a healthier, more inclusive society. Taking part in this event not only raised awareness of correctional consciousness but also delivered tangible support to those who mostly need it.
In a world that is becoming more interconnected by the day, digital literacy is crucial. However, the free and tech-dependent world produced a complicated situation for those who are confined, increasing their social marginalization and digital vulnerability. Long-term incarceration, limited educational opportunities, and technological restrictions severely impair their capacity to understand and adjust to the modern environment. They lack the skills and lose out on chances to maintain family ties, reestablish friendships, and—above all—find decent-paying jobs when they return to a culture that is heavily reliant on technology.
The College of Computer Studies (CCS), through the WE CARE Office recognized this limitation and implemented this initiative in hopes of providing PDLs with necessary tools and information to face the digital world. The Tech Behind Bars project aims to integrate technology and digital literacy in the reformation and rehabilitation of local Penal Institutions. During this project, there were several activities conducted. On February 27, 2024, the College of Computer Studies met and engaged with the Iligan City’s Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officers and discussed the conduct of training, marking the beginning of the program.
Lectures and training in digital literacy, including a Basic Keyboarding Training session, were given by the project team. Over the course of eight months, a series of training sessions at progressively higher learning levels are given. By integrating intellectual, commercial, and technological components, these programs provide a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and equip PDLs for a smooth transition back into society.
