The major U.S. military bases at Fairbanks, North Pole, and Delta Junction bring a lot of revenue into the region. University of Alaska Fairbanks, the second largest college in the state, also plays a major role in the area's economy.
Other important economic activities include tourism, maintaining the Alaska Pipeline, servicing the oil field industries of the North Slope, and the Ft. Knox mine, which is the largest gold mine in Alaska.
