Fairbanks is the economic and cultural center of the Interior Region and the second-largest city in Alaska. The only other city with a population of over 1,500 is nearby North Pole. Most Interior communities are located on the region's major rivers, often at the confluence of important tributaries. Eagle, Ft. Yukon, Circle, Tanana, and Galena are on the Yukon River. Tok, Delta Junction, and Nenana are on the Tanana River.
