What if my student is planning to apply to one of the Program Schools or a non-HCS high school?
Students should submit their requests for CFHS even if they plan to apply to attend an HCS Program School for 9th grade or plan to enroll in a school outside of HCS. We would rather have student requests on file 'just in case'.
What if we submit the form and then my student changes their mind?
If, after submitting the form, you would like to make a change, please submit the form again. There are no limits to the number of times the form can be submitted (prior to the deadline). Please keep in mind that the most recent submission will be the one that is used by CFHS and any previous submissions will be deleted.
What if we are unsure of what academic courses to select since it is only December?
Please select your academic courses based on the courses you are currently in and how well you are doing at this time. Use the flowcharts on the 'Transition to High School & Beyond' presentation as a guide. When you have your student's IGP meeting (January-April), your student's academic course requests will be reviewed and can be adjusted as needed. CFHS school counselors will review final academic grades and test scores at the conclusion of the school year to ensure appropriate placement.
What if my student is currently in a course during their discovery time based on their status as an ESOL/MLL student or in relation to their IEP?
If your student currently has an ESOL course or Literacy/Numeracy course as part of their schedule, the high school team will work to schedule these courses after their course requests have been made. You do not need to worry about adding these courses to your student's schedules.
Can my student change their mind about their electives before school starts?
CFHS uses elective course requests to determine how many sections of each course need to be offered during the upcoming school year. For this reason, students cannot make changes to their elective course requests after April 1st.
When will IGP meetings be scheduled?
IGP meetings are being held until April. Each caseload counselor sent an email out prior to Thanksgiving Break with information on how to schedule an appointment.

Are there high school courses that my student can take over the summer for credit?
There are 2 courses that students can take online during the summer prior to their 9th-grade year through the HCS FLEX Program. These courses include Fundamentals of Computing and Physical Education/Health. These online courses are approximately 9 weeks long. Students should keep in mind that they must stay up to date with the pacing guide (provided by their virtual teacher) but can work at a faster pace. In May, Mrs. Kingsmore will email all 8th-grade students and parents/guardians information on how to register for a summer online course. There will also be a form that students and parents will need to complete and return to their caseload counselor prior to being approved for enrollment in the course. Courses typically begin in June, but specific dates and timelines will be shared in May. Once a student completes their online course and they receive a passing grade for the course (60% or higher), they will work with their high school counselor to select a different course for their 9th-grade schedule. It is important for students to be self-motivated and serious about taking an online summer course, as the grades a student receives on these courses will be included on the student's high school transcript and GPA (Grade Point Average).
