The diagram to the right shows the placement of the excretory system. Kidneys are located closer to the back of the body, under the ribs. The reddish-orange organ is a large artery through which blood and waste enters the kidney, and the blue-gray organ is a large vein through which clean blood exits the kidney to be returned to the heart.
The diagram to the left shows the inside of the left kidney (it looks like it is on the right side of the body, but imagine the person is facing you...their left and right are opposite yours). You can see the renal artery (red blood vessels) enters each kidney. Those reddish, triangle shaped sections are where the filtration happens. Clean blood exits the kidney through the renal vein (blue blood vessel), and the urine flows out of the kidney through the ureter.
